Wrongful SSRI Usage
    #6567343 -

Alright, Well I recently started getting bad anxiety from smoking pot and am currently trying to quit. Anyways I told my doctor I was getting anxiety (in general) didnt mention it was from pot and he gave me SSRI's (Cipralex). I know this was a stupid thing to do but is there anything I should worry about is there any negative effects from taking a SSRI' if one is not needed. I also suffered minor depression before I got prescribed this and it seems to be getting worse not sure if this is the pot or the SSRI. Thanks any help would be appreciated.

Edit: Also can regular pot usage lead to permanent anxiety? (while sober)

I would worry about your penor not working right.

I would also worry about fucking up your brain chemistry.

SSRI's do funny things to your autoreceptors...

I agree with AroundtheSon. if you don't need SSRI's i wouldn't take them. Screwing with brain chemistry like that is not usually a good idea unless it is out of whack to begin with.

I forgot to mention, you might feel shittier when you first start taking them (as you seemed to have experienced) but it should mellow out after two or three weeks.

If ANYTHING feels wrong or you start getting crazy like (e.g., suicide thoughts) - consult your doctor.

I started taking the SSRI's about 2 months ago they seemed to help at first (reducing anxiety after I smoked) but now its just making everything worse (unless its the pot making my anxiety problem worse and worse)

SSRIs and SNRIs are both known to cause increased anxiety, depression, fatigue, insomnia, and muscular pains in people who do not smoke Cannabis.

I was on prozac before, and it gave me lots of problems... I went without anything for years after taking that garbage, and now I take 5HTP. Its natural and you wont get terrible side effects from it.

Do yourself a favor, learn about the dangers of SSRIs i believe that in 10 years time, people will look back on SSRIs and they will :nonono: shake their heads in disgust at how we all were dosed.

I started taking citalopram last month. Seems to be okay. I started it cause I was having serious problems being around groups of people even if it was only like a half dozen people. I had to do some group speaking recently and had no anxiety. If you've suffered from anxiety you can imagine how great it feels to just be yourself.

The only negative effect I've found is that it takes FOREVER to bust a nut and when you finally do it's kinda disappointing. At least there is no impotence problems that's what I was worried about.

Yeah,  I used to smoke daily.  A while back I totally quit smoking weed because of anxiety.  It's odd that mushrooms are actually easier for me to handle then weed.  Recently I've started smoking more often again I think the clexia or whatever they call this type of SSRI really is working nicely for me.  In your situation if your only getting anxiety from smoking weed my suggestion would be to lay off for a while.  No reason to take something like an SSRI unless your anxiety gets to a point where it's keeping you from reaching your goals.

Funny thing about anxiety, the fear of anxiety itself can bring on anxiety.  Before you toke remind yourself why your smoking turn on your favorite tunes you like to hear when blazed and chill out man.  It's just weed :stoned: GL bro

Thanks, musher_420

Well, here I am sober... I have a little anxiety but no where near as much as usual (not a full out panic attack). Now is it possible (at this moment) Im having anxiety because of the thought of quitting?

nm.. dumb question.. I answered that myself

Exactly, even the physcial side-effects - hair loss, vision loss, weight-gain should tell us they're not healthy in our bodies.  If I went to a MD, they took a blood test and said: "Well Mr. Smith, your blood test reveals that your levels of serotonin are below average.  Try taking this here pill for a week and come back for another blood test."  Then, maybe, maybe I would consider it.

SSRIs have a whole boatload of possible unpleasant effects whether you're depressed or not.

As someone who has taken 5 or 6 SSRIs, a couple SNRIs, and bupropion (none of which really worked) I'd strongly recommend you look into something else like 5-HTP, SAM-e, rhodiola rosea, st john's wort, etc.

Personally I take SAM-e and rhodiola, no unpleasant side effects and it works far better than any prescription I've been on.

No addiction to these either as there is with anti-depressants, the one thing MDs will almost always neglect to tell their patient.

Its true. When I was prescribed zoloft a couple years back. I asked my shrink. Is this shit addictive, because I don't want to be given anything addictive. Of course they said, no no no, ssri's are not addictive, they have no abuse potential. They may not have much abuse potential, but they are addictive in the sense that you will suffer horrible physical withdraw after a few days of not dosing on them.

I tried quitting the zoloft cold turkey, I was ok for about 2 weeks. Then suddenly, I became extremely, tired, nauseous, off-balance, slow, and depressed all at once. I've never felt so sick for so long in my life. It lasted one week. After a week I went to my physician she asked me if I was on any medications I said "Zoloft, but I stopped taking them." And she went, "well thats probably why you feel so bad, here I'll write you a prescription for them, start taking it again." I did, and I felt better. Then I wheened myself off that shit because it has shitty side effects.

My side effects included: insomnia, dizzy spells, took longer to cum, and when I did, it wasn't as good, emotional numbness. It did help with my depression, but only to the extent that it numbed all my emotions. I couldn't really feel happy, sad, scared, didn't feel emotions much at all. I felt something was wrong when I realized I couldn't cry anymore.

Point: SSRI's are prescribed deceitfully, and have side effects which many times outweigh the benefits. Serotonin reuptake should not be fucked with, doctors don't even understand whats going on at the synapses for the most part. I don't think messing with any neuro-transmitter reuptake is good.

Yes widthdraw is a long process with SSRI's if you want to do it safely. Even if I go 2 days without taking any I start to feel really strange, I don't want to be around anyone, I feel paranoid and anxious, I feel shakey, almost scared, feel sick, not good mentally or physically at all.

All synthetic SSRIs are not meant for us to take. Cut down on the pot if you are having anxiety. Also, look into St. John's Wort (natural SSRI) and Valerian (nerve calming) supplements.

Yeah, it's really not a good idea to increase or decrease your dose quickly with a lot of things, but SSRI's especially. I have a feeling the reason why physical withdrawl symptoms are so common is because people try to do it too quickly. Obviously, if things aren't going well you should talk to your doctor as soon as possible, but if you are getting bad side effects stopping completely could be worse and more dangerous than the side effects which might only be temporary anyways. Not trying to say it won't happen even with careful dose adjustments, but i've stopped taking 3 different SSRI's so far without any noticeable effects. I had more problems starting them as opposed to stopping.

I took one SSRI, lexapro, for 6 months. Started at 10mg/day for a week, then went to 20 for 6 months. Felt freakin great, all the time. Smoking pot was like bliss, too. I asked my doctor if they were addictive and if it'd be ok to quit them after a little while. I quit and within a couple days I turned into a paranoid, anxious, ANGRY person with NO patience for ANYTHING and near-constant "electric shock" sensations and vertigo. I called my doctor's office, struggling to hold back from crying as I explained to them what was happening. My doc was out of town but someone there was nice enough to call in a prescripion for 200mg of the stuff. I started taking 5 mg/day which was enough to keep me from feeling like I was going to fall on my face at any second, then cut those pieces in half so I was taking only a little crumb of pill every day. I did that for a few weeks and started to feel ok. I quit taking the crumb/day and everything came back almost full force for another couple weeks. I didn't even feel like my stable self for another 9-12 MONTHS. It was the most long drawn out bullshit I've ever experienced. Never going to that doctor again. Fucker. he even gave me a taper schedule but it was for something like prozac with a days-long half life, not lexapro with its 24 hour half life. he was like "Then just take one pill every three days and after two weeks of that you should be fine. I told him to screw off and tapered myself. No way in hell could I have gotten by taking one every three days, I'd just feel good for a day, terrible for two, repeat. I think doctors get kicked a share of the profit from pharm companies for continued prescriptions and he was trying to get me hooked. pretty damn hot business they run at $4/pill.
