If the federal government gets no say at all in what people eat, then the federal government should have no liability at all in caring for these sick people. I think the best situation is somewhere in between.

I can't believe how people here want to tax cheap food while there are food stamps and poverty with malnutrition out there.

They dont want to tax cheap food, they want to tax fast food. Fast food is expensive as hell. Im not poor but I sure cant afford much fast food.

Can most of you seriously afford to spend $5+ a day on fast food? That might be a good poll, how much a day do you spend on fast food?

Is this normal or just bad timing? What's with the preoccupation?

Just wondering..

Perhaps a sign of the times, but intolerance is on the rise on the Shroomery. On the same note, you can hardly start a positive thread about homosexuality here and many here in a very vocal way seem to loathe "political correctness" and social sensitivity does not generally seem to be considered a virtue.

The Shroomery isn't the place anymore that many veteran members were enchanted with back in the day.

That's very true, in a way it's helping me to adjust to the outside world, I blame it all on Hanky.  Look at the rating he left me:

I don't dislike fat people,, anything i say on the topic is more of a fatherly kick up the ass type thing.

I think people get annoyed because the majority of over weight people don't do anything to help themselves,,, that leads on to the attitude alot of people have..

There's a similar attitude towards people on benefits in this country.

Each to their own though i guess at the end of the day.

I think the real reason is that it is easier to be tough and hate than it is to show feelings and extend your love, especially when it comes to strangers.

The general tendency is to hurt people to avoid getting hurt yourself, independent of disability, race, sexual preference, poverty or all those other factors that are so readily hated upon.

I beg to differ,, i don't think people see how love could be of any help with people who need to get active and look after themselves...
It's an interesting approach but i can't see it ever resolving anything (apart from making everything more acceptable, but that's not really a solution in this case)
But thinking like that, the people that are bad mouthing should be genuinely concerned for the people they speak of.
I realize that's not always the case and more selfish reasons are at work.

Just because someone has an attitude with over weight people does not mean they hate in general.
That attitude with over weight people seems justifiable to many people,, for reasons already discussed.
Much more so than mindless hatred like racism or homophobia.

I know hating all fat people is mindless but it only takes a minority to take a whole group down.

I would not be surprised if the majority of people on the Shroomery hasn't, doesn't or quit using mushrooms.
Many staff members for instance have stopped or otherwise do not use psychedelics, and thats just a small defined group of shroomerites I happen to know a lot about.

I mean with us being a pro drug website, constantly fighting a false view created by a small bad minority that the people generally focus on.
We realize that not all drug users are bad in the same way we should realize not all over weight people are fat lazy bastards, lol.

Sometimes I wonder how many bad stereotypes about druggies are actually true :frown:

A lot of shroomerites seem to lack basic selfrespect and generic respect, are on a dead end road in their lives and gobble drugs like they're candy with disregard to personal safety, just like the anti-druggers say they are like. At times you see threads like the one we had the other day, where just about everybody in the thread said it was OK to shoplift at places like Walmart. There is a lot of self-destructive, cheap and highly stereotypical druggie behavior going on.

More and more people get fucked up instead of High.

I know what you mean, i don't think anyone's on a dead end road though (well maybe afew but then there has to be). Things have a habit of changing quickly...
Ive seen people that look hopeless completely turn their lives around in a matter of months so there's hope.

I have a habit of getting fucked up myself but there's usually a reason for that behavior.

Most of the people here seem good hearted at core,, and they do show benefits from their chemical experiences...

Have faith,,, the world is only how you perceive it.

I did see that thread and i think it was mostly supported because of the general dislike for bigger companies and their tactics..
I wouldn't steal myself because i wouldn't like the way it'd make me feel but i can understand how people rationalize it...

I'd like to think there's a way to make people feel responsible for themselves without making them feel like shit.

Most people claiming to be about tough love seem to weigh way more heavily on the 'tough' and less on the 'love'

I think a lot of intensity comes from the fact that there is an underlying repulsion towards those that are weaker.

What helps is when you can say it's their own fault- it's their own fault that they're fat or poor. It justifies all the shit talk. Now that racism is taboo, we have to hate on somebody, right? :P

It certainly is someone's own responsibility to take care of themselves. I just think it's more useful to try and focus on fixing the the root of the problem rather than the effect.

I grew up pretty poor..eating fast food was a once in a blue moon treat for me. My mom was on welfare and we used food stamps to buy groceries and received food from the government. (Mmm government cheese.)

I hardly ever ate veggies though- always white rice, white bread, that kind of thing. Rice and beans is all right, but now I try and shop in health food stores, but find it to be incredibly expensive.

I'm still trying to develop a taste for salad..bleh.

I was an overweight kid. I lost a bunch of weight now that I stepped out of the shell of my ghetto-ish neighborhood, went to college, etcetc. I mean, it's hard to change eating habits (for me) -- really hard, but I try.

I think taxing fast food would just leave a bunch of people pissed off and not do much else. I don't think it would lead to healthier eating habits, personally. But that's just me.

It's not so much hate,, it's more an irritation.
I really shouldn't stereotype, and i'm trying not to but there are people out there that need to kick themselves into shape..
They got themselves into the situation and they just carry on.

We should keep ourselves to ourselves and leave people be, so i can see where your coming from with the "we have to hate on somebody, right?".

But i can understand why people take that tough love attitude,, people usually do focus on an extreme minority,, and for that minority maybe this attitude is justified.

Ive seen those intense fit club type things and for the people running those it's a tech that works.

As for why general people convey the same attitude i'm not sure,, because obviously it's not going to help..

Maybe basing this on the minority idea it's just the obvious one to take.
In which case people should educated themselves before they speak,,, ive never heard an overweight person agree with one of these threads yet so maybe the public is missing something..
I think that's probably the case.

all those gyms like 24 hour fitness and such shouldn't charge so much for a

membership instead they should pay people to go work out. that would be a

much better incintive for people to exercise. or offer some sort of ridiculous

prize for losing 50 pounds. like an all expense paid trip to tahiti or something

cool.

:nonono:

People would be vomiting, dehydrating themselves, starving themselves to win that trip.  Improving health isn't always tantamount to losing weight.

How about if we tax unhealthy food and subsidize healthy food with the money.
