It's a misquote and you know it.

Intentional misquotation is a dishonest technique used by those unable or unwilling to refute the actual words of an opponent. It is a form of the Straw Man Fallacy. :smirk:

I remember when the misquote meme first emerged in OTD. It was funny. Much humor resulted from putting ridiculous words into the mouths of others. For OTD it was considered fine because OTD is one big joke anyway.

However, once established in OTD, the meme began to spread into other forums. In the same way that metastasizing cancer cells crowd out healthy cells as they spread through the body, the misquote meme's version of misinformation began to crowd out the truth.

And here we have an instance of the phenomenon in W&AF. Misinformation in the form of intentional misquotation propagated by a moderator in a forum other than OTD. The poison is spreading, you are spreading it, and I am merely describing the state of affairs.

That's like saying "If you don't like the trash in your neighborhood, just move."

It's a far more reasonable course of action to clean the trash, and start coming down on people who litter.

It isn't a dishonest technique, and it isn't misinformation. Anyone who has read the thread already knows what you said - it is an effective manner to express what you think about what they actually said. You know, like "you said that but all I heard was this".

It may or may not have its place in this forum in particular but to consider it to be cancerous growth emerging from OTD is one of the more ridiculuous things that I have heard.

OTD is one of the more popular forums in the Community sub-category of this website. It is going to require more than your own personal opinion on the matter to convince anyone that it should be dramatically altered or removed. Our forums are in place due to the community's interest for such a forum. It would take a signfigant majority to bring such action into place. The administrators aren't going to just fuck with the core of a forum on a whim.

No. OTD has become a cauldron of hate because of the racism and scat. Some seriously deranged people reside in OTD. And yes they, being that type of individuals, also lack the self-restraint nescessary to keep it within OTD.

So, the results of the great "OTD experiment" has actually been running for about 3 years now. I say it has failed. Instead of what I initially imagined, a place of great humor and good spirited, uncensored fun, it has become a cess pool of stagnated bullshit, lies, lynch mobs, and retarded insults.

That really stinks. OTD could be so much more, as it once was. It's a crying shame that you can't, or refuse to see it.

I think it is valid. I presented my view and have nothing more to add at this time. We'll see what happens when some of the more reasonable, well-adjusted Shroomerites begin to chime in.
