Two Questions

My first question is:Can you birth a cake at about 98% colonized, maybe even 99% and get away without contams? Or should I just wait a while longer.
Second:Wil saran wrap sealed with masking tape pulled tight over a Steriite container be good for containing humidiy, and letting light in? Or should I invest in a little plexiglass?That was like four questions but...er...yeah.

Sometimes you'll get a wet spot that will never colonize. If it has kind of stalled at 95% or more, go ahead and birth.

Your saran wrap will prolly work. Make sure to give air exchanges.

if any substrate is exposed you may get contams. its really worth the wait to make sure you don't screw up a few weeks of preparation.

i would caution against using saran wrap because its very fragile and could likely break and allow contams to enter freely (it also tends to strech). if you get a clear piece of vinal (like shower curtains), that would be a good window to install in the lid (tape it to the outside with duct tape). otherwise get a piece of plexiglass and tape that down.

for future reference, try to get rubbermaids/sterlites that are transparent all around. this way you don't need to worry about a window or making sure light enters through the top. since you are doing cakes, the increased light through the sides of a transparent container will induce pinning better.

thanks for the advice 8ball, i have those transparent tubs and my setup is doing good. ;P good thing i didn't cut the whole in the top, would have been useless
