A microwave question not covered...
    #858479 - 09/02/02 09:32 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Would saran wrap melt if I used that instead of plastic lids? I mean, if there is anything anyone can think of to use for a lid (anything that won't melt and isn't metal, I'm sure there's another option). Anyway I know already that this isn't the best way and I'm going to put a pan of water in there and all that.

just use metal. as long as there is subsrate or something for the microwaves to be absorbed there will be no sparks

NEVER EVER put metal in a microwave oven!! You can get away with the wire handles on Chinese food containers, but that's about it.

Putting metal jar lids in a microwave is SERIOUSLY BAD advice!!

well yea, ive used saran wrap also. actually i just did that earlier today to see if it would melt cuz i never thought of using that. but when i used it i took the jar lid off and wrapped saran wrap over the top. then i wrapped a rubberband around the jar (to hold on the saran) everything was good until i put it in the microwave- then the saran wrap bubbled up lik eit was gonna pop. i dunno if you can poke holes it in or not?? would that ruin the steril. process or cuz the substrate to dry??

id really like someones opinion as well, bc this is much easier than boiling and ive heard of ppl having a 100% nuking success.

"You can get away with the wire handles on Chinese food containers"
i would advise against this. also dont use tinfoil.
metal doesnt absorb microwaves just reflects them. small, thin or sharp metal in a microwave may cause problems. a metal cap will be no problem if there is substrate.
i sat a course on dielectric heating (microwaves) in university, the first day we went through all the myths and there origins. metal on its own is bad news. a jar wrapped in tinfoil will not get heated too since all microwaves are reflected

It is apparent to me that while some metals reflect the microwaves, others absorb them. ?For example, the metalic coated cardboard used to brown "Hot Pockets" or "Micro-Wrap" that you can buy in rolls that's metallic coated to brown food. The square area on the bottom of a pop-corn bag, etc.

Also, the wire handles on chinese food containers absorb... Don't touch them when you take the container out, you'll get badly burned. I've been putting those in microwaves for years without ever having a problem, but something tells me that a metal canning jar lid would cause a MAJOR problem, as would aluminium or tin foil.

microwaves are absorbed by small metal objects and reflected by large ones. popcorn bags with those thin metal strips get up to 260C. gives me another idea though. metal filings in the substrate!

>>>metal filings in the substrate!
persoanlly i would be afraid to use/handle that substrate/cake once its done, adn i would be afraid to eat the fruits of that cake in case there were metal pieces in it... couldnt you jsut do a few layers of saran wrap? wax paper + rubber band? there are many other options than to fill your growing medium up with metal shards...

but if you do use saran wrap, can you poke small nail holes in it to prevent the "bubbling" up of and "popping" of the saran wrap without drying out the substrate or causing it to be contaminated?? if there are holes in the metal lid while boiling i dont see why this would be a problem, but id like to hear what mr mushrooms or toxicman have to say about it

>>if there are holes in the metal lid while boiling i dont see why this would be a problem,

the holes when you are boiling or PC ing are taped to prevent contam or release of moisture

>>can you poke small nail holes in it to prevent the "bubbling" up of and "popping" of the saran wrap without

i think that the saran wrap is merely too THIN to use efficiently. perhaps waxpaper rubberbanded or taped @ container?

i think i will try the wax paper today, rubberbanded on with spacers between the wax paper and the jar, so as to simulate the conditions that jars have when they're loosened.
