Very SERIOUS need some good Info.
    #6533833 -

Hi, First of all Im new here at the shroomery so I'd just like to say hey all!!

Ok, I have this serious problem which is basically my fault but I need to straighten this out so Im looking for good advice.

So, I've been smoking weed daily for about 7 years now and I smoke waay too much. So usually this is no big deal for me. Anyways in the past months (starting about 3 months ago) I have started to get real bad anxiety from smoking. The anxiety was soo bad and at first I didnt even know it was anxiety I just got a feeling like I had to goto the washroom in the pit of my stomach and when I would goto the washroom I would either not pee at all or pee very little. I could of swore for the first few week it was a bladder problem that only came out when I would smoke.

Any how, I went to the doctor to seek medical attention first guessing it was a bladder infection maybe (dumb thought considering it only came out after smoking) but soon ruled that out. So we agreed that it was anxiety (now I told the doctor that it was a common problem and I would get it when I was around a lot of people or in uncomfortable situations), never once even mentioned the fact I was into any type of drugs. So I was prescribed 'Escitalopram' (Cipralex) to treat my anxiety problem.

Now I instantly noticed that the anxiety after smoking was getting better although still there. A month or so later the anxiety is still better but still present after smoking.

Well I ran out of my prescription a few days ago and didnt get around to getting it refilled until today (5-6 days after running out). During the course of stopping the meds cold-turkey I got very lightheaded and dizzy (not a problem) however at night I would not be able to sleep and felt VERY depressed, lonely, scared, and dreadful.

Now I know I should just quit smoking pot but I am HEAVILY addicted and dependant on it. If I was going to quit I would NEED some type of sleep aid (main reason I am dependant) now would that be a smart thing to do? To quit and take sleep meds until I am off the pot than try to get rid of the sleep aid dependency? or should I just quit cold-turkey and deal with not being able to sleep for 2 weeks?

Another question is it at all bad for your health to be taking these meds (SSRI's) if not needed (I have mild depression as well) and is it bad to stop taking for 6 days than to suddenly start taking them again?

Also if I was to quit smoking pot should I just quit taking the SSRI's as well and hope the anxiety vanishes?

I could almost swear that the meds are making the anxiety worse in a way. (eases the anxiety I get from smoking but almost seems to give me anxiety where I would usually have never had it)

Also this feeling in the pit of my stomach where I feel the need to goto the washroom but to no avail will continue on for hours if I keep smoking, I should also point out the first time I ever encountered this feeling I was young (17 or 18) and I ate 3.5 grams of mushrooms and I could not calm myself down and had this feeling until the mushrooms started to wear off.

I would then get this feeling everytime I ate mushrooms thereafter up until now (basically ruined my entire love of psychedelics) and now its forcing me basically to give up smoking pot which I love with a passion.

I should also point out when I retreat to my room after smoking a bunch of pot with friends the anxiety almost vanishes (social anxiety?, I am quite shy) However after stop taking the meds for 5 days.. yesterday I smoked a huge bong session and felt very uncomfortable at my friends so I came home and played a game before I knew it , it was 3 a.m (I smoked the session at 10 p.m. so I am basically sober) I shut the computer off went to bed and had my first true anxiety 'ATTACK' this is where I had the feelings of dread, and loneliness. It literally scared the shit out of me but eventually I calmed down enough to sleep. This gave me a new prospective on people who think about suicide.. I seriously never thought anything of it and considered the people who did weak, or mentally ill.. Now I have a whole new understanding.

Well it might just be the addiction but I swear pot is my life. I think about what I would do without it and it just seems lame, boring, and a waste of life. (even though its probably the other way around)

I dont know what to do anymore. HELP!!!

alright man. listen. you should stop taking drugs to treat other symptoms caused by drugs. you need to stop smoking pot it sounds like. you say it causes you anxiety, so bad that you have visited a doctor and come here for advice. yet you say you are dependent on it.. So your saying your dependent on becoming anxious?
From what you have been saying about drugs, I dont think you know how to use them in a way that allows them to help you.
Why is quitting hard if youre just getting negative effects from it?
You need to do something else with your life to fill the time you would have spent smoking. What are you into (or what WERE you into back when you were sober?).

Pot has become your life it sounds like, but its making you suffer. The addiction is in your mind, since you and I both know marijauana is NOT physically addictive. It is only habit forming in the sense that sex, reading, video games, and food, etc... are. Its not going forward that you seem addicted to.
So i would say, smoke 1 hit at night if you really need it as a sleep aid, but other than that quit. Definately dont take a sleep aid (aside from natural teas and roots..) You cant solve a mental drug problem with another drug, especially if you have an addictive personality (which is really sounds like you do). Reading a good book will help you fall asleep, as will physical activity.Think of the money you could save and spend on a vacation, a house, a boat, a snowboard, etc...
So not sitting around smoking is going to leave you with alot of time your habitually used to smoking during. So do something else. Do you have a job? If not, Id definately get one where you feel good. As in you work with people you enjoy doing a task/whatever that isnt unbareable, that isnt overly repetative. Get a job you can enjoy. Also you could try to find others who are also quitting pot, so you can relate and help eachother.
It is not hard to stop. Just tell yourself youre not going to smoke, and make sure you know that and you wont think about it. After a week or a month or 2 you will notice the positive changes the marijuana made to your conciousness are still there, and that 'sobriety' is a drug of in its self.
Its only as hard as you make it. Its not hard.
Keep us updated

Actually I got laid off about 3 weeks ago. Im thinking it will much easier to quit without a job because my biggest problem is sleeping without pot. I have on many occaisons spent 3-4 hours rolling around in my bed sweating before falling asleep.

"The addiction is in your mind, since you and I both know marijauana is NOT physically addictive. It is only habit forming in the sense that sex, reading, video games, and food, etc... are. Its not going forward that you seem addicted to."

I know its not physically addicting, but goddamn as addicting as video games, reading, or food? Have you ever been HEAVILY addicted to pot? When I was 15-17 my friend would steal pounds of marajuana from his parents who grew 100+ pounds a year and we would smoke OZ. blunts on a regular basis. I mean its not insanely difficult to quit but you make it sound like some kind of cakewalk.

Im going with the bedtime bowls as of right now, I guess I will try to slowly lower my addiction, 1 toke simply wont do it for me... unless maybe I smoke 1 bowl a day for a while to lower my tolerence. The bad part is I have to find a job soon which will make it much harder to quit.

The only way I can possibly think of doing it is simply staying awake and playing video games until I really feel like falling to sleep. If I did this I'm sure I would stay up until 7-8a.m every morning and sleep my days away.

Anyways I took my SSRI today and I feel much better lighthead, dizziness, dread, loneliness, fear all disappeared. What causes the extreme depression after withdrawling from the SSRI?. Its like my brain has been trying hard to reuptake the serotonin which isnt happening due to the SSRI and after you stop it reuptakes much more than usual leaving you with real low levels, is this possible?

I cant even remember what I was into when I was "sober" its been that long, pretty much same thing Im into right now which is working out, biking, and video games.

i smoked for 5-6 years like an 8th a day for the last year and i had problems with my roommates at college and decided to go live back home with my parents. So i had no connections where my parents live and basically stopped cold turkey after my stash ran out. It would probably be much easier to taper off pot. like set aside 1 gram a day as your smoke allowance or however much less than what u smoke now of course. Stop hanging out with ur friends if all they do is get together to have smoke sessions and play video games/watch tv. And find a good distraction for yourself. Girl, hobby, work, school etc. As for going off ssris i think it varies between the drugs if u can just stop taking them. read webmd/rxlist and see what it says bout getting off the meds.. I havent smoked for about 9 months now but i think im going to start a healthy weed habbit again but this time smoking muchhhh less =)
good luck.

Read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSRI_discontinuation_syndrome

Likely a desensitization due to high levels of serotonin (and other neurotransmitters) circulating in your synaptic clefts. Neurons will down-regulate the number of receptors on your neurons to compensate for an overabundance of neurotransmitter. If you go off the drug suddenly you're back to normal levels of NT but don't have the number of receptors you used to, thus you've created a chemical imbalance. Anti-depressants are usually tapered off and your pharmacist and/or doctor should have told you not to stop immediately for this reason. If you had killed yourself as a result and they did not inform you of the danger of stopping immediately your family might have been able to sue!

I would DEFINITELY try non-pharmacological methods before going on an SSRI. What does your diet look like? What do you do for physical activity? What sort of social interaction do you have on a daily basis? I highly recommend quitting marijuana. In my experience it is a sensitizing drug and can make feelings of doubt and fear unbearable that you otherwise would just disregard. Until you quit weed it won't be possible to determine whether you are really depressed or whether the psychoactive is just augmenting a very minor depression/bout of anxiety you would otherwise just get over. I recommend being honest with your doctor, telling him you smoke weed and that that might be contributing to your depression. If he's a douche, fuck him and find another one.

Thx a lot for the info. guys.

Eightball: I would also like to smoke muuchhh less, like once a week or whatever but I know that would just cause me to relapse into smoking everyday if I could quit in the first place that is.

aelephant: my diet is pretty off right now considering Im waking up at 4p.m pretty much everyday due to not having job but Im eating the typical 3 meals a day, I was trying to eat 6 small meals a day to gain weight but I dont have the funds for that right now. My physical activity is fairly low considering its winter but I workout (resistence training) 3 times a week. I pretty much hang out with the same people everyday who all smoke pot, and I am often hanging out at my one friends whose place is pretty much a hangout and he pretty much has anywhere between 2-10 people there at any given time.

i started smoking much more when i moved in with some friends who smoked pot. Like one person wants to smoke so they call everyone in for a session. Seriously enviroment and supply are key for quitting drugs. But i say taper off both the ssri and the pot till you dont have a dependance on either. Use pot as a reward for weekends or special occatioons. Note: it being 4:20 somewhere on earth is not a special occation to smoke =P

You say you cant remember what you were into when you were sober? You need some HOBBIES. Get out, find a job, go do SOMETHING. What are you interested in? Sounds like you may need to 'get away' from you're current environment for a bit, and get to know yourself better. there is more to life than weed.
