Hmmm.... mushrooms must all look very similar to you?? I showed you some Copes and you said that the mushroom you picked looked just like them, but the mushroom that Damo posted looks nothing like a Cope to me. Colours all off, girth of stem is too thick, gills are white, etc etc..

Anyways. Still would like to know what the mushroom grew from.

sorry for the late reply. It was growing off a little piece of bark. Im am not hopeful anymore as there is no bruising.
My shroom was a lot smaller than yours? ok.

Is it possible for psilocybe mushrooms to be active that do not bruise blue? (if i were to mistake it for anything it would be a psilocybe). or am i just noob.

I dont know what you mean by gritty. but id go for stringy. Its a tough stem and doesnt break easily.

It smells like a mushroom. and thanks for the help.

Im new here in australia and i was told my best bet would be to look for shrooms on cowshit, and not to waste time in the forest (which is complete opposite to what im used to).

Uhhh.... I'd say your best bet is to hunt for Psilocybe subaeruginosa, it is the common active Psilocybe native to New Zealand and Australia. It does not grow on manure, but grows from any mix of wood/soil/plant debri/mulch. So, look in urban or forest type areas for this mushroom. Click on the "Search Posts" link at the top of this page, and select the mushroom hunting forum to search, and search for the word "subaeruginosa" also known as "subs" not to be confused with a different mushroom which are referred to as "subbs".

Your mushroom is definitely not a Psilocybe, and not active either.

If I had to make a guess I'd probably start with Collybia or one of the genera close to it.

Happy mushrooming!

Just to correct you curecat, he would most defintely NOT be looking for Subaeruginosa in QLD... Australia is a huge Island Continent and has a very varied climate, have a look at the comparison to the USA in the bottom corner of THIS MAP .

The region of Queensland is a tropical climate and supports Cubensis and Copelandia at this time of the year. South East Queensland has been known to produce Subaeruginosa but I think its very rare.

No problems brother - its not your fault that the USA syllabus and media doesnt teach your population about other countries... Did you know only 21% of Americans even own passports?

Chuck aside half an hour some day to do a bit of reading on Australia - it really is a huge and diverse, wonderful place to live, and theres a cold beer in the fridge at my place if you ever decide to stop by...

It looks like a mushroom. :rofl2:

LOL.  You should really get a field guide, learn your terminology, and DO SPORE PRINTS!!! This is the best way to narrow down families by process of elimination.  Very good picture i have to give you that.

But i guess what i really want to say is that mushrooms can have many different odors. Some can smell like your typical store bought button mushrooms, Agaricus bisporus. However Agaircus Praeclaresquamosus (Flat -Top Agaricus) in the same family has a phenolic odor. Some can smell very sweet, even resembling the smell or maple syrup of butterscotch like Lactarius Rubidus (Candy Cap) Some can smell like sweet almond extract, like Hygrophorus  agothosmus (Gray Almond Waxy Cap). Clitocybe nuda (Blewit) has been said to faintly when fresh to smell like "frozen orange juice"

So saying it smelled like a mushroom is pretty general and doesn't help much. However great picture and happy hunting!

Word.  School in the U.S. is very exclusive of other Countries, except to mention them in Historical context.  I would say, however, that spending a good part of my time online during my teenage years, helped to open my eyes to a lot of the world, and as a result, I am more informed about other countries than most people my age.
I do own a passport.
Have been to Jamaica when I was young, and went to China for two weeks a few yrs ago.  I love traveling.... the cultures are SO different.

It seems that half of the information that you provided was obvious from the picture. Odor is important and a good thing to point out. However you should really read the rules of the mushroom hunting forum.

Quote:
It is critical that you describe mushrooms fully and accurately in order to get a proper identification.

A good picture of the mushrooms is invaluable, but not required.
Along with the pictures YOU ARE REQUIRED to provide the following data:

* Habitat (where [woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude] and what [soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?)] does it grow on)
* Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
* Characteristics of the stem (length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
* Characteristics of the cap (diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
* Spore print color (very important!)
* Color that the mushroom bruises
* Scent of the mushroom
* Anything else you might find important

I think you should be paying more attention to the trees around you and the habitat. Most important where it grows. Fresh wood chips are for primary saprophites. After the primary breaks down the wood or decaying matter then secondary saprophites move in and break the wood down more. After this finally the tertiary saprophites decompose the left over material and turn it into rich soil for plants to regrow. Most mushrooms are saprophitic. The others are parasitic, growing off a host plant essentially killing it slowly. And the last are micorhizal which there is a symbiotic relationship between fungi and plant.

This is just one way to narrow it down when you have experience with mushroom hunting and identification. It is not something that is usually used for ID in a key, but it can narrow it down to someone who is experienced in finding a specific species.

And like it says above a SPORE PRINT is VERY IMPORTANT! Take the cap of the mushrooms and put it gills down on a white piece of paper. IF the gills are white or yellowish, then use a black piece of paper. Cover with a paper towel, or glass to reduce air currents and wait 3-24 hours to obotain a print. Then cap will continue to release spores. Observe the color and report.
