Golly, I love pinners. They ae the coolest of the shrooms, and the smallest as well.

Here are some baby pinners of the South African transkeii strain I grew in Bangkok last summer.

Check this one out. See the rectanguilar patch to the right with some pinners on it.



Now look at this image one day later and see the difference in their size. You can still make out the little patch to the top right in the image.

Yeah its been way to dry here in melbourne - i wouldnt expect much until atleast the end of April - the weather forecasts are dry right through March, so May is the best month - May, june and July traditionally.
Subs are good - more potent in my opinion than azurescens and cyanescens (what do you reckon MJ? :smile: I know you wont agree)

-Man. Those Orrisa's were beautiful. Those were from a couple years ago. My favorite strain and those originated from a print that came from.... Ralphsters i think, i can't remember.

Goddamn! It has been awfully wet lately and we had a really cold week. I'm eagerly awaiting autumn to get into full swing!
I've been eying out some mulch gardens on the way to work in the morning, but haven't noticed anything.

The only species that grows naturally in melbourne is Ps.subaeruginosa - which is identical to Ps.australiana. I grow azurescens, eucalypta and cyanescens and others in secret locations but arent naturally found here.

Nah, they were very little so I thought i'd leave them, then it got sunny for the last week and they all died. Its raining and cold again now though. I'll be keeping an eye on my patch until they start to go properly.

Speaking of early mushrooms coming through, I have been picking P. Semilanceata for the past week at some of my favourite spots. Its been cold and wet so I guess that's why they're coming through early.

Haven't picked a huge amount, only a few hundred, but its enough ;-)

Last mushie season I picked alot of P. subaeruginosa, but I noticed four different forms, all quite distinct, that have led me to believe that they are distinct species. The general descriptions are:

Type 1: Quite a rounded cap, bright golden brown colour, relatively thick stalk, growing on sandy/grassy areas

Type 2: Similar to above, but a much flatter cap with a 'nipple' (sorry don't know tech name), growing around pine trees and sand. Has a longer, thinner stalk and browner cap than type 1.

Type 3: This type is similar (if not exactly the same) to images I've seen of Ps. Cyanescens: Cap is flat with wavy edges, quite dark brown to almost black in colour, growing on sand and around pine trees. I would have thought they were Ps. Cyanescens, but "they don't grow in NZ"

Type 4: Squatter than others listed, growing on decomposing manuka wood. Quite similar to type 2 but smaller. This type I think may be Psilocybe Makarorae.

Does anyone have any ideas? I know they all sound similar (sorry I don't know how to do spore prints or anything) but when you see them growing in the same small area, and then hold them in your hand, they are obviously distinct from one another. I don't have any photos but in a week or two they should start coming up and i'll get the ol' digicam out.

Also a friend of mine, a person who knows alot about mushies, said he picked and then tripped off Copelandia Bispora last season, right here in Dunedin. I am determined to get some pictures of them this season as I've never heard of them growing in NZ before.

Boast: picked a Ps. Semilanceata the other day that was 25cm tall and had a 5.5 cm diameter :smile:

Type 3 I also find and thought were Ps. Cyanescens, these are the most potent I find. I also find Type 1 and 2, I'm going to post some pics over the course of the season and hopefully get some proper ID's on them. The north island ones could be different again to the south island ones. Have you sampled your semilanceatas yet?

No, I haven't tried them yet - my studies are keeping me busy... There is a rave coming up soon though and they are always fun on mushies :smile:

I have had alot of semilanceata trips before, and I rate them higher than subaeruginosa for strength and feel. Do you find many up in Hamilton? I picked over 5000 last year (and could have easily got a lot more

semilanceata are the best shroom in my opinion - my first mushroom trip was on libs from the south island when i was over there on holiday. Im looking at ehading over later in the year and would be keen to chat to you guys about good spots for semilanceata and makarorae. I did find aussie subs to be more potent than the libs i tried, but their vibe was just awesome...
As for the species thing, you would expect makarorae to grow in particular species of wood debris - nothofagus as example. Its a petite mushroom described as:
Cap - 15-55mm conical to campulate, expanding to convex with prominent often more or less pointed umbo, yellow brown to orange brown, often paler between the striate margin - flesh white. This mushroom suposedly resembles P.caerulipes - so picks of that should give you some idea of what your looking for. Buchanan mentions finds in Bay of Plenty, Westland, Otago Lakes, Dunedin.
In contrast Aucklandii is also quite interesting -growing of soils rich in wood debris - similar to weilli and zapotecorum. Reputed to be more potent than subaeruginosa and it certainly stank of psilicybin when i crunched up a jar of its mycelia spawned on grass seed. Its got a darker stem and looks again quite different to subaeruginosa.
Subaeruginosa comes in a variety of forms - or variants/binomials. Since the varied macroscopic characteristics dont match the microscopic variations, it has been concluded that these variations - the umbonated azure lookalike, the brown umbrella shape, the yellowish eucalypta cap and the wavy-cap (australiana) are all just phenotype expressions of the same entity - Ps.subaeruginosa. They are all cross-compatible.
Rule of thumb for subs is that if it looks like Ps.ccyanescens or Ps.azurescens, is growing off disturbed wood debris environments - particularly garden, landscape, pine mulch and its got greyish colouration to the stem, then its a sub. If its got yellowish, blackish-grey, white stringy fibrils on the stem, or is growing off an unusual type of wood in a more natural location, and is quite clearly unlike a member of the cyabnescens family, my advice would be cut a gill fragment, make a print and then send both express post to me!

When are you coming over to NZ bluemeanie? April-May are the best months for picking here. Dunedin is good for Semilanceata, Subs., Makarorae and I've heard of a few Copelandia Bispora picked here too, but have never picked any of those myself.

They are definitely popping up all over the place now :smile: Its been cold and wet today so I might go out this week sometime for a look :smile:

Zebes, from what i've noticed from patches of mine over the last couple of years the subs seem to mainly grow in light grey large woodchips that turn a light brown when wet and are easly found in public suburban parks.

Lucky south islanders! I had a look the other day in my usual area for Aucklandii, but no sign of anything. It's still too warm and not wet enough yet.

Copelandia bispora is only know of from the Republic of Central Africa, Hawaii and Switzerland. Not found in Australia

I never realised people from NZ where posting on the net, i'm glad I found this forum.

Is anyone in Auckland finding subs yet? I havn't even found amanitas yet.

The weather is shit, sort of cold at night and still dry and hot during the day, I first found a nice patch of very potent subs very early May last year and thats getting close to only being a month away, damn global warming.

Has anyone found these funny little shrooms that look alot like normal subs except they are very black when small and black/dark grey when mature, they grow on wood chips in suburban parks (Keith Hay park, Mt. Roskill, in the bush behind the soccer field) and so on in fairly large numbers. There not very potent but I havn't been able to identify them yet.

Me and my mate are eagerly awaiting the first flush.... hopefully it will be in 2-3 weeks as I predicted.

Those are nice pinners, my mate found about 15 working in someones backyard (hes a gardener), very very potent.

Oh and, where do you find aucklandii growing Sheepish? I've only seen pictures but would like to find them.

As far as Amanitas go, I was really surprised at how many amanitas muscaria there were when I went biking in Rotovegas on the weekend! They were absolutely everywhere. Could have come home with a kleensack full!

This begs the question do do you think I'm likely to find P.subs there when it gets a little colder?

I've found that the 'new' tanbark/woodchips that gets put into parks and the like doesn't seem to be that great of an environment for subs. Usually I can tell which chips aren't appropriate as they seem to not change colour very much when wet. As someone previously stated the ones that go brown when wet seem to be a better habitat.

The season is well and truely on its way though. I can feel it :smile:

Seen a bit of fungi around the place, STACKS of coprinus around some places, and it's been getting mighty chilly in the mornings. Now all we need is some rain...

nOs,

I assume you where biking around the pine forests in Rotovagas? Amanita's grow in pine needles in large numbers, subs can grow on pine needles but it's pretty uncommon.

You are more likely to find them in wood chips/complex bush/under old pine trees with rich grass at the base. You don't need to go out in to the bush or out of Auckland to get them, one of my better spots is in a small box garden in a really built up area.

You will want to start searching in 2/3 weeks, I'm hoping there should be some growth by then, providing there is enough rain, a few sprinkles are supposed to come on Monday :/.

I spose it depends on what area your in, i've seen them in public parks but havn't really picked them from there much as i have my own good spot.

i can't wait either, now i've got something to look forward to in the colder months.

Also what i noticed particularly with last years season as i got quite into shrooms and picked quite a lot is over time if your picking grom the same spot not only does the potency go down but also the shrooms after pick start loosing there blue. First pick they were putting big stains in the paper bag that i put them in, towards the end they wern't, but i spose it was getting a bit hotter.

Ill PM some of you guys about when im coming over - id rather not post the dates if possible.
Basically - most of the shrooms growing from areas that are landscape garden woodmulch and pine mulch in distrubed habitats will most likely be subaeruginosa. If you want IDs please let me know by pm and a small gill fragment/sporeprint is enough for that.
The mushroom Sheepish found is definately not Ps.subaeruginosa - Id assume that from its characteristics it owuld have to be aucklandii - this may when i fruit it we will know for sure. I was hoping to get hold of some makarorae, semis and aucklandii or anything else unusual.
I found that subs tend to vary in potency with flush - in australia the first flushes are always the most potent - later flushes are still shit hot, but not as potent in general. Ive also found that the wavycap and the eucalypta variant is often less potent than the umbonated subaeruginosa. People will disagree, but this is true in victoria/nsw anyway.
I found subaeruginosa and cyanescens to be comparable, but both slightly more potent than the azurescens ive grown.
The patch i was talking about with 3000+ was just a random find - we tried to isolate and reintroduced when it died out and it has picked up again, but time will tell...

You know that if you are in some parts of california the conditions aare similar to parts of Ausrali awhere subs grow... and there are a few eucalypts and pines over there... sounding like youre needing to look into making a sub bed.
