Sydney north shroomhunting
    #4061533 - 04/16/05 04:21 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Hey all,
I went shroomhunting today in a national park about 30mins north of Sydney CBD. I found maybe 30 species just today, but i am still very beginner at indentification. ANY info on the following pics would be most appreciated.

Habitat: very fertile soil, There where about 8 in a group, and not common for the area i was searching. After about 4 hours of searching i only came across this species once. I did see lots of look alikes but these shrooms stood out and reminded me of the erowid pic of Ps.Australiana. I also there was a marker around the area i found these. (a bamboo stick about a foot high with a plastic punnet unside down ontop, well hidden but not good enough) , as if someone didn't want to forget/ want anyone else to know where this spot was. It was a grass area with a patch of excellent soil.

These are pics of the mushrooms which have some shade of blue either on the stem or on the gills. I can take photos of one specific one if requested for identification

They look a bit dark around the top to be goldtops..
We're these from up Mangrove Mountain way ?
Could be risky but I'm no expert....

Those appear to be of the genus Cortinarius. They should be considered poisonous.

Sounds like you had a good time hunting but don't try any of these mushrooms they are not Psilocybe and look a bit like Hypholoma and could be toxic.

There are so many around at the moment. I have been hunting around Sydney and found heaps of fungi. Still looking for some Psilocybe but i think it will need a cold snap to bring them on.

Here is a very nice photo of a yet to be identified Agarics.

Hypholoma was my first thought, and they may well be Hypholomas. However, if you look at the annulus you will notice that it is cortinate and rusty brown. If the rusty brown color is caused by spore deposit, which I think is the case, it indicates Cortinarius instead of Hypholoma.

Either way the mushrooms should be considered poisonous.

i doubt you're going to find any magic mushies in sydney just yet... perhaps you'll have more luck in a month or so when it gets colder.

a few tips on id'ing p. subaeruginosa -
white stems
obvious blueing - a deep vibrant blue. most mushies already have some sort of blueing on them before you even pick them, but any sort of handling will cause them to bruise even more so fairly quickly.
