any sort of activity which keeps your peripheral nerves going will theoretically help slow down neuro degeneration.

This also applies to your brain. The more you try to learn and challenge and stimulate your intellect at an older age, helps to slow down neuro degeneration i.e. alzeimer's, huntington's.
