Birdseed Question

I have noticed a few different methods in preparing the birdseed before PC'ing...
which to you reccomend?
Load the seed into the jars with 1/3 cup of water for every 2/3 of birdseed, then pressure cook?
Or... let sit overnight in water, load in jars then PC.

My friend's sister's boyfriend who saw Ferris pass out at the 31 Flavors last night does birdseed like this:
1. Boil a gallon of water 2. Turn the heat off, and add the bird seed (10 lbs bag) 3. Let steep for 45 minutes or so 4. Mix in vermiculite to absorb the excess water 5. Scoop it into jars and do the ramsey seal thing 6. Pressure cook at 15 psi for 45 minutes
This is one way, as you said, there are a few different methods...

In my experience with birdseed I have done it both ways. Just PCing and letting it sit overnight. Both work well, however I feel letting it soak overnight is a little better.
Recently, I let birdseed soak overnight then PCed. I innoculated 22 jars with PB and they are doing awesome. All are showing significant growth. I am in the opinion that letting it soak works a little better.

Sweet! Thanks for all the feedback... I believe im going to try to just load it into the jars w/ gymp. and just let it soak overnight in the jars and the PC it. This way I dont have to deal with loading that mess into the jars... illl just have to play around with the water/birdseed ratio and get it right. Once again, thanks for the feedback!
Any reccomendations on the ammount of gymp. I should add? Ive heard a knife tip, and a spoonful... but thats different for everyone.

I've done the 1/3 to 2/3 thing and it worked fine for me. This past weekend I I tried the rinse and soak technique that StainBlue talked about. I rinsed the seed and then soaked overnight. I rinsed again, drained, and loaded into my PC. I didn't strain it all the way though, I left a small amount of water in with seed and PC'd for an hour and 15 min. I then let the jars cool a little bit, took them out and shook them. I let them finish cooling overnight (back in the PC) and innoculated the next morning. I have 4 pints, and 4 half pints. 2 of each were done with agar wedges (amazon) and 2 of each were done with a syringe. (Creepers). That was Saturday morning. As of Tuesday night, I have varying degrees of colonization in all of the jars. All look healthy, so this method seems to be working well so far. In either case, sterility is the main issue. -Bruiser

Shaking the jars after PCing them is very important, and of course, I left it out on my post. Unless you want to dig the birdseed out of the jars with a spoon, you really need to shake the jars after they come out of the PC.
