Another (yet new, maybe?) LC Question
    #6497937 -

If this issue has already been resolved here, I appologize, for I didn't find it in the database:

I have made probably about 10 or 12 LCs since I started growing mushrooms, including making LCs from other LCs, as well as from spore syringes. However, I have tried now twice to get my current B+ LC to cultivate another jar of LC, and it won't fucking do it. I'm on the third failed jar of LC, and it's been over a week without any growth, but here's the clincher;

out of the same jar of LC, I have successfully inoculated about 16 different grain jars over the course of the past month - all along trying to make another LC jar becuase the current one is running low.

What gives?

I dont know it should do it... altough you dont hear about people going from lc to lc much.

I have made LC from LC on many occasion and it has almost always worked out great for me,I know it can get weaker over time if you do it over and over but you should be able to go at least 2 generations with no problem

Oh, well, this would probably be the fourth generation. Maybe it's just time for a new culture?

MORE likely than the mycelium "getting weaker" is there is slight bacterial contamination.

contamination isn't always as black & white as you might think.  i only am recently coming to grips with this myself. :smile:

i have had LC's that harbor perfectly healthy and viable mycelium, along side bacteria.  inoculating a grain jar results in perhaps weaker than usual growth, but full colonization nonetheless.  however taking a sample of the same LC and transferring it to another bombs.  placing it in a fresh LC solution full of nutrients but lacking existing mycelium, allows the bacteria to flourish in that case - bacteria grows excellent in the presence of all that water and lack of vigorous competing mycelium, when compared to within your grain jar.

i think this slowly creeping up of bacteria in an LC happens more often than people realize, and is the real reason their LC's dont remain viable for more than a few months, or can't make it past more than a few transfers.

at any rate, its time for a new culture. :smile:  LC is quick and convenient, but really and truly is crap for long term maintenance of a strain (if you're looking to go more than a few months that is.)
