Oyster art project and glove box/fruiting chamber construction project
    #6481142 -

I'm soon going to start an art project involving fruiting oysters out of the stomach of a small doll I am going to construct using steel rod (coated so it will be waterproof) and some kind of fabric. My plan is to weld the frame for the doll and then cover it with the fabric, stuffing it with either colonized newspaper or straw. I will place the doll into a Plexiglas and steel box so the heat and humidity will get high enough for fruiting. The fruiting box I am planning will be a cube constructed out of welded pieces of 21" angle iron bordering pieces of Plexiglas. I will probably epoxy 5 of the 6 panels to the angle iron and use bolts to hold on the door. I also have the capacity to make holes for gas exchange, humidity meters and a temperature probe. While I am making this box, I also want to build a glove box. I will construct this in a similar manner to that of the fruiting chamber, except I'll make it the same dimensions as a 20 gallon fish tank. What do people think of this plan? I think its very feasible and I hope to get some quality tools out of all of this as well. I'd love to hear any input and will post pictures as I make progress.

Man, that's an awesome thing you got going there.  We really need to see this happen!

I was thinking of doing something similar myself except with sculpting luminescent panellus mycelium in different shaped containers...we'll see if it comes to fruition!

Have you ever seen the work of Philip Ross? He did some stuff with reshkis that is really cool. I was also thinking about messing around with them myself too see if I can get anything cool to happen.

I got some of the angle iron for the boxes today. The place only had 28ft so I think I'll probably go back soon to get the rest. It only cost $14! Now just need to order some plexi. So this is what I think I am going to do as far as construction of the fruiting chamber...
I am going to make it 18" wide, 24" long and 12" high. It will be constructed of pieces of 1" wide 3/8" thick steel angle iron MIG welded into a box. I will inlay panels of plexiglas between the angle iron, probably using epoxy and bolts. In the upper left hand corner I will drill a hole for the hose coming from the humidifier. on the right end (above the level of where the castings will be) I will drill 2 or 3 1" holes which I will stuff with polyfill.
As far as my research has shown me this should be everything I need to have to have a good fruiting chamber. I may also make a little plexiglas box on the inside which will hold water and a fish tank warmer, if it is necessary as well as a small hole for a temp/humidity probe.
I think I am also going to make a smaller 12"x12"x12" box constructed in the same fashion that I will use when I actually display the project, and just stick the big one in my closet.

How does this sound? Am I missing anything? Are the dimensions OK? DO I need to have any more holes for anything else?

I agree...grotesque would describe it.

very interesting idea though, can I ask what the concept behind it is?

Reminds me of Damien Hirst's cow in formaldehyde - absolute genius! Then there was this other guy who made a plaster cast of his face, then poured his own blood in it and froze it - gross I know, but IMO quite a clever idea.  Don't know if any of these guys are trying to say anything with their art though or just trying to shock.  Also makes me think of those Cordyceps shot in Planet Earth.

Ok, so I've finished welding the frame for the fruiting chamber. Because of the difficulty involved with making all the corners right angles I'm not going to make the smaller one. Its dimensions are 18" wide, 24" long and 12" high. Now I need to go buy the Plexiglas, a humidifier and some polyfill. I think I might also build a stand for the box, a small box of sheet metal to house the humidifier and perhaps plant put the whole thing of a mat of grass grown under florescent lights... not too clear on the details of that as of right now though.

While I've been working on this project I've kinda been thinking about the fruiting of mushrooms out of a "doll" (a small representation of a person) as a physical representation of what happens when we put information into ourselves. For instance, if someone watches a lot of TV, what they think about and their mental bloom will be completely different than someone who doesn't adhear to the messages the media sends. This mental bloom will either be helpful or detrimental, in the case of this sculpture detrimental. I'm going for a creepy sleeping beauty thing.

Yes, exactly like that... I was thinking that I would probably stuff it with either straw or newspaper. Any thoughts on what oysters would like best? My blue oysters just finished colonizing their WBS jars so I need to start experimenting with the fabric and doll and all that now.

Ok,
So I've finished the fruiting box (pics soon) and now I need to start sewing the body of this thing so I can stuff it full of inoculated newspaper. I need to have this thing fruiting by and on March 15th. So once I inoculate the newspaper about how much time should I expect before I will have fruits? I'll post some pictures very soon...

If you have a good strain, you'll be ok, but hurry. The picture above is my representation of the ancient 'cave bee' that is on the first page of chapter 1 of stamet's ggmm. Hemp covering, stuffed with pasteurized straw. The bee's head was not inoculated or hydrated so it would preserve the colors.

If your project colonizes before March 1, put it in the refrigerator or outdoors in a shed, or some other cold place until the 7th, or it will be already finished by the 15th. Best covering I can recommend is to put a large trashbag over it, that has had lots of holes cut for gas exchange. If you put it in the final 'art' box, it's likely to contaminate from lack of air. Save that box for display.

Thanks for the reply. I have two strains: blue oyster and yellow oyster both from sporeworks. I am thinking I want to use the yellow oysters because of the color. How long approximately will it take for these strains to fruit after they are finished colonizing the filler? I am planning to have the dolls sewn and inoculated by the 15th by the latest... I can also do it later if it ends up being better for the overall timing of the thing.
The 'art' box is actually designed to be a fruiting chamber and has a hole drilled for a humidifier intake and two others drilled and filled with polyfill. From everything I've read I should be able to store my doll in the box... without any airflow/contam problems

How long to fruit is strain dependent My oyster strain begins to fruit within a couple of days of full colonization, which should take no more than two weeks. I can typically plan on a harvest by the 21st to 25th day after spawning to bulk. Your strain could be different. I'd do it as soon as possible, because you can always drop the temps to slow down growth once they start pinning, but there's nothing you can do to speed it up if it's not ready yet.

Workman should be able to help with timing, since they're his strains. You might send him a link and ask for his input.

Precise timing with mushrooms you have never grown before is going to be a challenge.

How about this alternate to putting all of your eggs into one basket.

Since you only want the mushrooms to fruit out of the stomach, make the doll able to accept colonized and fruiting inserts of substrate. Instead of colonizing the doll and hoping for the best, make several inserts of both species started at different times and under different conditions. A day or so before the due date, take the best one (covered with small mushrooms) and fit it into the doll. Allowing them a day or so to mature in the doll will give a more natural effect and won't look posed. Good luck!

That sounds like a great idea. I was thinking of making a few alternative stomachs and attaching the arms, legs and head depending on which is more developed, but then that would pose the problem of doing the attaching. The doll I got actually has a zipper on the back and would be perfect for using with inserts. Will I need to cut a hole in the stomach for them to grow through?

Yeah, you will need to cut a hole in the front and if there are mushrooms on the insert and it might be tricky forcing them in from the back.

I suggest filling the doll's body with modeling clay to stabilize it, cut a ragged opening in the front and press a small round gladware container into the clay to make a place for the insert and then remove it. Press it down deep so its completely hidden by the edges of the hole in the shirt which should be cut ragged so it looks like the mushrooms just burst out. Then grow some mushrooms in the same round containers. You can easily place these into the existing hole and posed the edges of the shirt hole in a dramatic way.

Hope that helps, looking forward to the final product.

Oh, and if you completely fail for some reason and still want a similar effect. Look into making fake mushrooms using insulating expanding foam like in this thread.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/5974703#5974703

I am not exactly certain how this was done, but the effect is awesome. I would guess that the expanding foam mimics mushroom growth and gives a very natural appearance. Its just a matter of placing the foam in the right place and shape and letting it expand into a simulated mushroom.

Thanks for help Workman! If I do it this way I can also add one of those cloths the comes out from the body and that exposes a certain area like those they use in surgery. Can I grow the mycelium directly on the newspaper in the gladware and then cut a hole in the lid and glue on tyvek for the gas exchange? Also do I need to incubate while the newspaper colonizes in the gladware?
Edit: One more thing: will I need to PC or otherwise sterilize the body of the doll if I use the insert method?
