December 28th, 2006 at 2:00 pm My dad passed away
    #6408349 -

My dad passed yesterday, he had cancer and was diagnosed terminal four months ago. It was hard to watch him pass, since pretty much everything that could go wrong did go wrong. In a way im happy that he isnt suffering anymore, but i just didnt want him to go. I wasnt ready i guess, but its over now. I tried to prepare myself, but when i left the room he was in, he was doing pretty good, and then when i came back in the room whem my mom arrived, i was able to give him a kiss, my mom said that she was here, and he took three very slow and deep breathes, and finally passed away.

At least when he went he wasnt in pain. He was on so much morphene, that if he was awake, he didnt know what was going on, and he couldnt formulate words to communicate to us. I think he knew that he could talk so he would have to use hand motions to try to talk to us. A half hour before he passed, i told him that it was okay for him to let himself go, and that everyone would be OK. It was the hardest thing for me to do, but im glad i was able to, or i hope at least i was able to ease into the next stage, so that he wasnt stressed or worried or anything about the people he was leaving behind.

Yeah I have no experience with this. I have no practical advice. Just try to deal with it in a mature way. Don't collapse like it's so easy to do. Handle it like a human being and not like a child and it will only make you stronger. That's the best I got.

My condolences as well.  I went through a very similar situation with my dad about 2 years ago, so I know how hard it is.

That is the best advice anyone can give. Thats how I move past these things when they happen to my family. Im not sad because its over, I am happy that I got to spend as much time with my loved ones as possible.

My condolences man, losing a loved one is terrible. I cant wait for the day that they find a cure for cancer and HIV, because they are both death sentances and cancer usually gets you in the end. The only way we can deal with it is accept it, accept the circle of life and realize that we must get on with and live our lives to the fullest, because no one lives forever.

:frown:  my sympathy for you and your family. the way you described his passing seemed like a good way to go though. family at his side, not feeling much pain. it sounds like he passed being loved unconditionally, and that, i think, would be extremely comforting.

death is just another part of life, don't fret my friend, it's only natural.

Someone very close to me died about 5 years ago with lung cancer (non-smoker). It all happened so quickly it didn't even seem real. Maybe that was the hardest thing to deal with---how quickly it hits.

One day he is as fit as on ox and within three months he had passed away. I don't know what to say. It sucks and I am sorry to hear about it.

Wow.  MushroomSally's and My  Step-Dad passed away 2 years ago - yesterday!  Also from Cancer.  He struggled and suffered for 16 months and it was a heart wrenching relief to see him go when he finally passed.

I wish I was with you to give you a big hug, because you're gonna need one.

Do what you can to help your mom with whatever she needs.  It's going to take a lot of time for everyone to heal and get back in the swing of things.

Like you said though, the suffering is over.  And honestly, that's the hardest part.

Nowadays, my father in law (diagnosed terminal in March) isn't doing so well, and he'll be going into a hospice tomorrow morning actually, because we really can not take full care of him at home anymore and it tears me apart to let him go somewhere else to die, but it's not my choice to make.

I'll pass you some of the strength I have left.... I hope it helps.

And I'm very sorry for your family.

Love and Sincere wishes to you.  xo

Sorry to hear about your loss chaos. Losing a parent is something most of us have to face in our lifetime and it is never an easy thing. The death of my mom was rough on me (I was only 22 years old) but in time the pain subsides and nothing but the fond memories remain. I'm sure that you will find yourself reminiscing fondly about your dad in years to come.

Best to you and your family. Be strong, and be well.
