Re: Mysticism Forum [Re: wilshire]

MRP, in my perspective, is a valid forum that has a specific purpose, but I feel that it simply isn't as understood/used as it should be.

I see both forums as being centered around spirituality and the exploration of thoughts. The critical distinction is that P&S is focused on open discussion, and, with that, requires that posts be expressed in a manner that facillitates productive, open discussion. I personally see MRP as being a forum in which one can express one's thoughts and perspective in a manner that does not need to conform to the requirements of open discussion. Posts could be more artistic, perhaps even stories with metaphors, plays on words, simply expression itself without any limitation.

I have often moved some posts from P&S to MRP because these posts are more free expressions that, while valid perspectives that quite possibly involve spirituality, they are not really presented in a manner that facillitates discussion. I've been told before by some individuals who have posts moved that I am acting as the dictator on what constitutes spirituality, but it is not a judgement that I am making - my judgement is on whether or not a post will cater to the demands of open discussion that P&S requires. I've been active in the forum for five years, and I think I have a reasonable perspective on the nature of P&S. :smirk:

I think that MRP isn't as frequented due to the fact that its purpose is misunderstood and that its title, "Mysticism, Religion, and the Paranormal" paints an inaccurate portrait of what the forum is about. Its about free expression, creative and artistic manners of conveying spirituality and one's thoughts.

It was created to resolve a dilemna that occured, way back in the day, when an individual would post in S&P about some idea or belief of theirs, and others would be motivated to critique and debate it, which was not what the individual was interested in doing.

I feel like I had more to say but I guess that's it. Input on this is appreciated. I think we could breathe some new life into the forum if we wanted to, and it is something that I hope happens when I move posts that are more suited for the forum there. I like the idea of creative and artistic expressions of spiritual ideas, even as I am more driven to present my own ideas in manners that provide for P&S style discussion of them.

Woah, FWG, are implying that productive open discussion doesn't take place in MR&P. Silver just said thanks to people for giving him new things to thank about regarding something he is personally interested in of a mystical nature. People are thanking each other for sharing things in their through discussion and posts all of the time.

Of course nothing will be produced for anyone with ZERO interest in mysticism, the paranormal or religion. They shouldn't read there then either if they have no interest in any of it.

One of many reasons for the split, was to remove those subject matters from S&P, because the regulars with zero interest in them saw posts pertaining to interests in the mystical, paranormal or religion as unproductive clutter.

Another reason is that, personal beliefs derived from a subjective experience and therefore subjective evidence, have no objective evidence with which to be used in a debate. People who just wanted to share a discovery from a personal experience, and maybe were looking for others who may have discovered the same thing in their personal journeys, were being asked to PROVE IT. WTF?

For some reason, it wasn't obvious to members, which posts were put up for debate, and which were put up for the sharing of beliefs, ideas and experiences or articles and web sites of interest they found. For some reason, it wasn't obvious to some, that not everyone with an interest in discussing Philosophy and Spirituality, wants to debate it or argue over rights and wrongs about it either.

Another reason is that some people decided for everyone who walked in the door there, that they should be in "spiritual training" by their school yard rules, and become insensitive to feelings. So they took it upon themselves to smash people in the head until they grew numb to it or left crying, or just left going "WTF is that guys problem?"

It was sort of sick to watch.

Just wanted to add to what you said FWG, and clear up that even if you think nothing productive has taken place for posters of MRP, it doesn't mean it hasn't for them.

Not sure if that is a question or a statement, but, no, it is not being implied that productive communication does not occur in MRP. "Productive" in terms of the typical type of discussion that occurs within the specific forum which I was referring to, naturally. Clearly my viewpoint is expressed from the interest of one specific forum, as moderator of that forum and as long-term participant in that forum. All aspects of my post demonstrate that I view MRP as a valued part of this community, and that its discussions are productive in the context of its purpose and intent. Referring to what is productive for one forum does not imply that I am stating that what occurs in another forum is not productive, and I'd appreciate that this distinction be realized.

No doubt, but your point has no regard for the context of my reply. Never stated or implied that nothing useful or valuable would be produced in the forum.

The biggest distinction between the forums is the manner in which discussion is permitted to unfold, not the type of topics that are discussed. This is evidenced by the fact that mysticism and religion are still, at this very moment, discussed in P&S. It is the manner of discussion that distinguishes the forums from each other, and it is the difference in the preferred type of discussion of various users that is responsible for the creation of two seperate forums.

Precisely. Different manners and avenues for discussion, hence two different forums. Nothing wrong with either forum, or either manner of discussion. Different purposes and intent, different forum rules as a result. We're not covering anything new, surprising, or neglected here.

Different people seeking different types of interaction. Hence, two different forums covering the same type of topics but different avenues for discussion to follow. I stated this in my last post and I'm repeating it now.

That's your interpretation. Clearly, in a general sense, there were two different approaches to proposing ideas and two different concepts on how these ideas should be exchanged and discussed. The staff and the community made the decision to facillitate this by creating two different forums, one for each purpose. My entire point was that one forum seems to be a bit misunderstood. Perhaps you aren't replying to me but to the creator of this thread?

Oh no. People discussed how they go about spiritual training in "their schools of thought" and how they thought everyone should train as such who entered the doors of S&P.

Some people are naturally pacifists and its common to find them in spirituality forums where's there is a lot of talk about peace love and harmony. What a great place to find one to sucker punch, if your a bully to wimpy to pick on someone your own size. It happened in there a lot and you and everyone who use to read there knows it, even if they thought it was great entertainment and so therefore, not a problem to be addressed but rather something to be further encouraged.

Conclusions? You said it right here-

Critical distinctions are things that set themselves a part from others. If one has something, that means the other doesn't.

Maybe you did not mean to word it that way, and you did clarify yourself to say you didn't so this is cleared up now.

The rest was just my adding reasons for the split and had nothing to do with your reply and reasons.

Discussion in the MR&P forum may be productive, but it is NOT open.  Anyone posting there is warned:

Attempting to disprove or discredit an idea will not be tolerated.

That is limited or closed discussion.

Yes, to parties that share a mutual interest in Mysticism, OR the paranormal OR Religion, not parties interested in wiping those subjects off the face of the earth.

That part is a true distinction between the two hence the rule you posted.

The part about it not being productive for people using it is what I called FWG on and he cleared it up, so whats your point?

Re: Mysticism Forum [Re: gettinjiggywithit]

I think the confusion in my statement results from my inability to accurately represent the type of discussion that I was referring to. I was attempting to represent the type of discussion most natural for P&S, and then to state that posts would have to be expressed in a manner that establishes that type of discussion effectively. I think we are now on the same page as far as that goes, however.

The limited open part of MR&P is an obvious distinction between the two as its in black and white in the rules for all to see. Why a need to point out the obvious?

The limited openess is easy to understand.

If you were to create a hobby club, and none of the members had an active interest in the hobby, or even were curious to learn more about it, then it would be unproductive to meet.

If it was full of members who shared a common interest, all bringing their personal experiences with the hobby to the table, and helping others curious to learn more, it would be highly productive for said members.

For all I know, what FWG meant to say was that he wanted to see open debate in P&S lead to something productive instead of flame wars or off topic derailments.

I didn't know, which is why I asked for clarification and wanted to add some of my own while I was at it.

He is clarifying for himself and doing a very good job of it  So why don't you just let him speak for himself?

That isn't how I read it at all.  Rather, open discussion is allowed in MR&P without fear of rebuttal or belittlement.  That was the real purpose for why the forum was created...  to allow people to express themselves without having to defend their views.  I thought fwg did a pretty good job explaining it.
