Agar, I couldn't help but notice that you had a couple decent sized chunks of grain that didn't get broken up completely (unless my eyes deceive me). I've always pretty much broken everything up to the individual grain. Is it not important to be so thorough when breaking up spawn?

You should break it up into individual grains, if possible.

However, the more you mash/fiddle with them.

The longer they take to regenerate & get going again.

I'm a little lazy, now & don't bother, all that much.
Because, with a high spawn rate, it will colonize FINE.

When, I was first starting out, I was anal about it.

I would do wbs/grain jars HALF FULL.

Then get them colonized.

But, not so colonized they were rock hard.

About 2 or 3 days, BEFORE I planned to spawn a substrate.

I would shake those jars.

Which is a pita, once fully colonized.

Then, after they started to recover, I would use them.

Because, there were not all knitted back together.
So, you could tap the jar once & the grains came right apart.

Then, you could literally pour them out of a jar.

This is one place, spawn BAGS are better than jars.

Because you can massage a bag, a day or 2 before you plan to use it.
Then, they pour right out of the bag, easy.

is that a buffet tray?

It is a stainless steel steam table insert tray.

I would not recommend a novice use them.
Unless he has a way to cool an incubator.

Bulk trays tend to generate 10 or 12F, all by themselves.
If a trays starts heating up, you must lower the temps.
(quickly).

Otherwise fermentation can/will set in. :mad2:

Plastic trays diffuse heat FAR FASTER than stainless steel trays.
So, you must be VERY CAREFUL using SS trays.
Meaning, incubate at lower temperatures & be able to cool trays.
If they start to get warmer than you want.

But, they are cool, don't bend, are easy to clean & last forever.

However, they are a bit spendy.

"Plastic trays diffuse heat FAR FASTER than stainless steel trays."
quick question? how could a plastic tray (plastic which is am insulator) conduct-diffuse heat fast that Stainless steal (which is a great conductor of heat ?) if any thing the steel tray would keep it cooler, because it is a better conductor it would move heat from hot spots in the substrate to the cooler ones like the lip around the out side assuming the air is cooler.
the very nature of good conductors and metals is to keep an even temp by moving heat to the cold spots , that is why are frying pans are made of aluminium ,steel and iron not plastic or stone ( which is a plastic by definition)

Heat a plastic tray & the same size SS tray side by side to 150F, or higher.
Which do you think will cool off quicker.

Heat a plastic tray & the same size SS tray side by side to 150F, or higher then cool off IE place in Ice water , put your finger in side both trays witch one will feel cold first ,,, the steel one! because its a better conductor. metal stuff my feel warmer at first but thats just because it can give away its heat faster ,, thats why Ice Chests are made of plastic not stainless steel.. whats core temp would drop faster
a 1 foot cube of plastic heated to 150 core teamp or a 1 foot cube of steel heated to 150 core temp. the plastic would be warm for days , the steel would to cool in 30 min , just because it a conductor don't confuse it with phase change like water going from a ice to water to steam which takes huge to heat to go past each of the to points 32f and 212f the steel and plastic are in there frozen state and nether melt till much higher

A big Stainless Steel ice chest would cost $1000.

Thicker closed cell foam type plastics are great insulators.
(and, inexpensive)
That is why ice chests are made of that.

Thin plastic dishpan trays are NOT made of open cell foam type plastics.

shaking jars 36 hours before spawning seems to do the same

Was Hyphae's suggestion.  worked great or me.  Monotub colonization in 3 days.

when was the last time you got you tongue stuck to a cold plastic light pole ? never happen its an isolator.

as far as i know heat conductivity and electric conductivity are relative,if its good at one its good at the other proportionality
so based on that plastic would keep a substrate from equalizing in temp long that SS would IE if the substrate is 86f and the air was 80 the plastic tray will keep it warm longer and the SS tray will cool down faster..
and if the air is 84f and the substrate is 78 the SS tray will heat up faster and the plastics try will stay cooler longer

but if we where to test it all one would have to do is fill to trays of same size and thickness will hot water from the same pot and see witch cools faster , it will be the SS one

For whatever reason, a SS tray will heat up faster than a plastic one, and stay warmer, longer.

That's excellently helpful, Agar.

(Would like to see a step by step photo-sequence/timeline of steps for ph stabalization of casing layers for 50/50+).
