need failure-proof method
    #6290528 -

I’ve tried the PF-tek and the PF-tek for simple minds a total of five times and have yet to see success. I’d like to know what way, if any, is a more failure proof method of growing mushrooms. I dont care if the yields or potency are lower.

No matter what tek you do, failure hinges on you and how well you follow a tek. There is no bullet proof tek if you follow the instructions improperly.

With that said, there may be other teks that just might work for you. I tried PF tek first and failed miserably. I immediately went to grains -> manure and am growing them out of my ears.

That's about as easy and fool-proof as it gets?

Are you sure you're not doing something wrong? You're pressure cooking for an hour and letting the jars cool at least 6 hours? (overnight is best)

When you say no success, what do you mean? What went wrong? No growth at all? Contamination? No fruiting? Someone can help more if they know exactly what is going wrong.

the biggest issue I have is the white stuff never takes over the ENTIRE cake, even after months of waiting, than I try n' fruit them anyway, some grow mushrooms, most dont. I've had two contaminated batches, one green, one purple. I always have pressure cooked for 1.5 hrs and waited overnight for them to cool. I use BRF/verm for jars and kept them at the following temp, 80 degrees, 90 degrees, and 95 degrees. I also use TIT w/perlite for fruiting stage. I really have no clue what I am doing wrong but they just never grow.

Also tried casing once but nothing grew out of that, not at all.

What in the world are you using temps of 90 and 95 for ? and where did you read that ?

yeah those temps are way to high. are you allowing your myc to breath? try tipping the jars upside down to get some air exchange.

you need to read a lot more. the white stuff is myc and there are many reasons why it will not fully colonize. moister content is a big one.

birthing a jar that is not 100%% colonized is one of your biggest problems.

read read then read some more

i still read teks that i have read 10+ times. use the search function to answer any questions you have and to learn. i learned a lot by reading grow logs and journals.

patience is needed in this hobby also if some one does not have patience then this is not a hobby for them

good luck and i wish you success

You might be overdoing it with 1 1/2 hour PCing...I'm not sure. But I do know that that is way too high of a temp for colonizing.

TIT as in tub in tub? how are you getting enough air flow and your fruiting temps are way to high bring the temps down into the 70's for fruiting... your colonization problems seem to be FAE related. get rid of the TIT for a fruiting chamber.. you should only need that to incubate the jars.

I'd say check your gas exchange too... can't have the lids on TIGHT when the jars are colonizing.

I'm a novice but I would go with what Flower said, PF cakes don't need that much PCing hell you don't even steam/boil them more then 1 hour, too much cooking will 'cook out' the nutrients. So there is a chance that you're mycelium eats up what it can then just runs out of good food and dies out of energy.

Go straight to Monotubs. Read every monotub thread and tek every written.

Use a Pressure cooker and Wild Bird Seed in quart jars. Read every tek and thread on using WBS ever written.

Use Horse poo in your monotub. Read every tek and thread on both collecting and patuerizing horse poo ever written. Or use coir if you cant get Horse poo and read all the threads and teks ever written on using Coir as a substrate.

Read every thread and tek on casing and pinnings and colonizing grain jars you can find, although, I will say that after about 20-30 hours of reading threads, on any one topic, you will begin to notice diminishing returns.

My friend is working on his very first grow: He did 12 jars: 4 WBS, 4 rye, and 4 mixed without contams. He spawned 2 of each to alot of horse poo in a 22-gallon monotub. Cased with 3/4 inches of Jiffy mix (vermiculite mix). And he got his first pins tonight, and I think he am going to have a beautifull pinset (please god, fingers crossed, knock on wood, bow in humility before the Psilo God).

I read all the teks before I started and concluded that a monotub was the least expensive, with the best results (condensed fruiting area; no wasted space between trays) and the lowest risk of contams and the least amount of variability of key factors (ie humidity, Fresh Air Excvhange etc... It seemed to me like the clear and obvious best choice for a first grow intended to reap a one-year supply for personal use (for afoaf).

Of course, my friend is now hooked, and will make some smaller monotubs to experiment with techniques and strains all the time, but thats another post...

Are you using 1/2 pint jars?

PF Tek jars don't need to be PCd for 1.5 hours. It shouldn't hurt though, and 80F should work fine.

The water content in your jars is most likely messed up. This leads to slow colonization. Did you measure or eyeball whatever you mixed together?

Do you have a dry vermiculite layer between the BRF/verm substrate and lid?

How are your lids set up? The jar needs gas exchange.

Do you turn your jars upside down when the mycelium (white stuff) starts going to the bottom of the jar?

What part(s) of the jar are not getting colonized, or take a long time?

Do you inoculate via a print or a syringe? How much CC of spore solution do you inoculate the jars with?

Do you dunk and roll the cakes?

Do you scrape off the part(s) that have not fully colonized?

Do your cakes contaminate during colonization or when you birth them (take them out of the jar and put them in the terrarium)?

The purple contaminant might have been spores dropped on your cake, or the mycelium bruising.

You need to spend a while reading as many teks/posts as you can. At least until you feel you can Do It Yourself without refering to the tek, AND that you understand why you're doing what you're doing. Just the fact that you haven't given up is great though
