First Straw Attempt.
    #6279230 -

I have never tried straw, and am currenly out of aged manure, so I decided to give straw a try.
I Bought two medium sized straw bales at Michaels.
Ground up lots of the straw in the blender and the wife hated me for it.
Filled up about 1/4th of a pillow case full of straw and soaked in 160F water for an hour and a half, then let the water cool over another hour.
Removed from water, squeezed excess water out and let cool to room temp.

I really wasn't prepared for this, so I grabbed what containers were available. I used two of those plastic boxes that baby-Ass-wipes come in. (maybe 1.5 qt each).
For these, I put a layer of straw about half an inch thick, then sprinkled WBS on top, added another layer, sprinkled more wbs... Until it was full...

For the remainder of the straw, I found a 12QT halloween candy bowl and mixed 1qt of wbs with about 10qt's of straw, and mixied it up real good and covered with foil.

I didn't add bleach to the straw water, or lime for that matter. From searching plenty of straw posts, some claim successful results with or with out it. I chose without. Why complicate matters?

The strain used was Texas cubes.

I haven't decided if I will be adding a casing layer to these or not.
What do you guys think? Add a casing layer at 100% colonization?
Also,
How long before I peak beneath the lids to see how things progress?

If your doing a bulk, I dont even use a casing layer anymore (shroomery gasps!).

I would have to disagree, Casing helps with a micro-climate.

I use monotubs. Monotubs create their own "micro-climate". Makes harvesting easier also.

Good luck! How much WBS did you use?

I had luck with a mushroom box on straw before, but now have just spawned my own grain to straw with pasturized composted poo.

I worry that I should have put a layer of casing then gently put the rye spawn on the way you did, but instead I mixed everything up well like I did before per my mushroom box instructions.

The way the mycelium disappeared from view has had me a bit worried!

But a response I read, in another thread from RR regarding the way mycelium will disappear under stress and then re-group, has me trying not to worry that I beat it up too badly.

Mixing spawn rather violently to straw with the mushroom boxes never seemed to do any harm, I guess.

Best of luck with the grow!!

You want to mix it as gently as you can. The mycelium recovers on the grains, but what happens is when you damage the kernels, it leaves an opening for contaminant spores to get on the damaged grains and grow before the mycelium recovers. As long as you're gentle enough not to fracture the rye or wbs kernels during mixing, you're ok. Personally, I do it in thin layers when I make straw projects. Just add a handful of grain, and a few handfuls of straw until the project is made. This way you do it with no shaking or stirring.

RR-

I'm assuming mixing gently applies for hpoo mixes as well. Good assumption or not?

I've typically used latex gloves and just broke the wbs cakes up. Is there a better method?

Interesting.. In hindsight, the only casing I have ever gotten a contam on was a poo/wbs casing. I dumped the load of wbs on top of the poo in it's casing tray, and mixed it in really good with a fork. The others, I layered with wbs/poo/wbs/poo until the tray was full. I guess hindsight is only 20/20 when you know the facts..

As far as wbs used. I used half a quart each for two small trays, and one quart for about a 1:8 ratio for the big bowl..

I took a peep last night and things seem to be doing well.

Another process I have adapted with great success with WBS jars:

The reasoning behind bulk spaw with WBS is that each colonized kernel serves as an inooculation point. This would lead one to beleive to shake the hell out of the jar and break all those clumps up and then spawn.
I used to ensure that I had shaken well enough to break up the wbs into thousands of tiny kernels. But, now, I make it a practice to leave a few of those clumps attached(anything smaller than the size of a golfball). It hasnt't created a problem thus far.

Straw colonizes fast, doesn't it?
the rye I used just exploded when I spawned it.
there are some other useful pointers in my superspawning thread which is also kind of an incomplete straw growlog.
