Another FC Question
    #6271497 -

Hi All,

Im about to pull my cakes from their dunking chambers. I have built the 54qt PMP FC

My question is

Should I mix a little bleach with the water in the FC before pouring the Perlite in? And if so how much should I drop in?

or

Should I mix in a little Peroxide? " "

thanks for the help all.

You don't need to do anything with water + perlite, just pour and go.

I know there has been peeps using h2o2 but others not.  I believe the bleach idea is for Cleaning prior to putting the FC into production, but again it would be important to make sure residues are minimal...seen weird pics of mutants - sometimes from such chemical use.

I only use bleach to clean the glovebox, and I only use peroxide to add a bit to the cool mist and even that is maybe every 10th time I fill it up,as far as I can tell its just a piece of mind thing and who knows if it helps at all,I think that it is actually detrimental to mycelium growth and should only be used as an attempt to kill cobweb

thanks for the feedback guys. i went ahead and took your advice and left the chemicals out.

i just constructed the FC. again I used perlite.

i put 2.5 inches of water in and then poured perlite on top. is there suppossed to be visibible water below the perlite? i tried to push it down to level it out. so now there is about 1.5 inches of perlite from the waterline the top of the perlite layer. is this about right?

here are the pics

just a dash of peroxide would be fine.... like blutjager said.... who knows if it helps (not me) but i've done it and it didnt hurt....... a three second pour would work for a tub that size...... the bleach doesnt sound like a good idea though.... an old timer on here mentions using bleach for cleaning and rubbing the bleached surfaces down with vinegar afterwards

Well I took the cakes outa the dunk chambers. Can you please take a look and see if there is anything out of place. i am not sure if i have too much water on bottom of tub. the black line is the original water-line (before i poured in perlite).

thanks for your help and opinions.

There should be no visible water in the perlite. The perlite should be at field capacity, and no more. I recomend pouring your perlite in a spaghetti strainer or something to achieve this.

With standing water at the bottom of the terrarium, you are actually lowering your humidity.

are u using bubbler airstones? I have maintained a little standing water as I thought I had read that with bubblers there is a risk of so called running it dry. I acknowledge that this apparently has some influence on increasing the potential for contams. But so far so good for my progress....maybe I'm just having some luck too....LOL

I have been using it in the water in my perlite. I have some sanitation issues though so I always try and do whatever little things might help avoid contams.
