Removing wood powder from sawdust... need help.
    #6239356 -

So I finally nailed a reliable source for free wood shavings from a friend. They are all mushroom friendly species (mostly alder and possibly oak) but it is the scrap from his door manufacturing shop. So half of it is wood shavings and the other half is fine dust from a belt sander. Any great ideas on how to separate out the fine powder? I dried blowing air through a bucket of the stuff so the powder would float away, but despite the dust cloud I don't seem to dent the amount of powder in my mix. The best idea I had was soaking the mix in a 5 gallon bucket. Sure enough all the powder went into liquid, but my few attempts at straining the solution resulted in the wood shavings holding on to a lot of the powder.

I've considered simply adding 5%+ gypsum or vermiculite to the mix, but those are somewhat seasonal in my area and would like to minimize additives if I can. Any other bright ideas? Should I simply bite the bullet and stick with adding gypsum? Thanks guys!

Build a box with some kind screen on the bottem. Load it up with your mix and then shake the dust out.

i think i'd be more thsn happy to scoop it up with my hand - a combination of wood powder, sawdust, wood shavings and wood chips is a pretty ideal combination.

that said, if you really must have only the finest parts, then dump the whole lot in a tub, and keep shaking out the light stuff while the heavier stays behind. can't take that long.

Neither dust, nor shavings are very suitable for growing mushrooms. The mycelium can't get through dust because it packs, and shavings are too thin and have too much space between them to be of much use. Course sawdust is great, with or without wood chips, but I've never had much success with shavings.

I'm kind of screwed with the whole wood shavings crap. I like in an area where wood pellet fuel is made from evergreens and any lumber mills within 50 miles would be cutting evergreens. One previous load I got was pretty dust free and that PCed with about 10% wheat berry oyster spawn added fruited pretty well. Hopefully if the block is a bit compressed I can get rid of all the air spaces shavings introduce. A local mushroom farm get's most of his wood substrate from my buddy, and when I visited him he appeared to be composting it to some degree before he used it. Can you figure out how the hell that would be beneficial? Maybe I should investigate that more...

Thanks for the screen notion Roach, for whatever reason when I thought of that idea once before I put it out of my mind. I bought some mosquito screening for another project and I'll have enough left over to make something up, I'll try to post a pic when I wrap it up. I wish I could use all that dust, but oh well.

Quite a few wood lovers will grow on coir for some reason. I've had some good oyster and reishi fruitings on it. Shiitake however, is one that will not fruit if any coir is in the substrate.

There's a supply house in downtown seattle that sells course grade Alder sawdust in large 40 lb bags. Next week when I'm there, I'll ask if they ship. If so, I'll give y'all the number.

I've read that due to the treatment the sawdust goes through in making wood pellets may make softwood pellets usable for growing mushrooms. I think Rush Wayne says he uses them (douglas fir?). Here its hardwood, though, so haven't tried it.

Luckily the last time I checked the wood pellets in my area will support shiitake growth just fine. Oysters and reishi just fizzled in it. I believe I finally found on the web that the pellets were made of fir, and I vaguely recall that matching info in GGMM. I've thought about mixing it with other stuff as well, maybe 50/50 filings with wood pellets for shiitake etc. This is another big kink I'm still trying to work out. I'm having great success growing oysters with your oyster log RR, so I might need to stick with straw or my wood pellet brand lovers. We'll see, I have a lot more experimenting to do...

On that note though, I have thought of trying to work on with shiitake and straw a billion times. mushworld's shiitake manual has a whole bloody pdf on it, apparently that is how some growers in Europe do it, but I haven't seen anything else. When I was still very new to this I wrote fungi.com asking if they had shiitake spawn that would do well in straw and merely made me feel retarded. I just got a good strain of shiitake in, and in the next few weeks I'm tempted to do a shredded wheat with 5% gypsum and 15% wheat grain (as spawn) run in PCed bags. We'll see if I ever get the bloody time though.

It will be interesting to see if you can keep the straw non-contaminated while the shiitake sits there and takes it's time about fruiting. I grew some Ganoderma lucidum on straw this summer, so I guess anything is possible, but straw in my area at least is a short term substrate. Perhaps use it to cut the fine grade sawdust in the wood pellets?

Sheesh, reishi would be a feat I would think. I'm guessing you used your technique of blasting the blocks every couple of days with those blocks? That might just be the magical answer to the slow growing shiitake blocks on straw...

I wonder if a mixture of powder and shavings might not work though sense the powder would fill in the gaps? Who knows, I get all my sawdust from a local saw mill for $25 per truck load (which is cheaper thatn straw) so Ive never had the need to experiment....

i have thought about doing this also hardwood pellets are cheap and plentiful in my area...but not many hardwood mulches...all pine and cedar. i have been kicking around ideas to cut it with, funny coir came to mind...til i read just now that shiitake doesnt like it. thanks for the saved time on that one!

I had to learn that lesson the hard way. Shiitake colonizes coir like wildfire, then just sits. . . .and sits, but never fruits.

I have had the same results with shiitake on coir. Beautifully colonized logs but no fruits.
