No offense but last I heard the glues used in plywood contained formaldehyde and other noxious chemicals. Not to mention there are many woods that are toxic to humans. I used to to work in wood shops, for many years (I switched occupations a few years ago). I developed occupational asthma and I get a headache just walking into them to this day. I don't think that kind of thing happens from non-toxic agents. Then again, breathing and eating a thing can be a different animal all together.

Thanks a lot for the offer man, I appreciate it! I planed some solid stock birch today and got some great shavings. Should last me a while.

Find a sawmill that takes trees down to dimension lumber. You may have to look other places than just the yellow pages. A lot of them have no real need for advertising.

One mill in Wisconsin (Kettle Moraine Lumber, very well known) had to turn me down because a another mushroom farmer already took it. He said he gave away all of the "green" sawdust, that amounted to about 4 dump trucks full. He actually kind of giggled when I asked for "about a trashbag full". Interestingly, he said that other growers have tried using his kiln dried stuff but it didn't produce well.

The Birch I planed was kiln dried. I guess it won't work well after all, eh?

I meant to say also, that this guy is NOT a mushroom grower. I have no idea what to make of his comment, since I know that using kiln dried sawdust pellets is common.

i got oak sawdust from a place that does it for fish smokers in Scotland - they sent me 25kg, enough for ages if i can keep it dry and uncolonised. i spoke to them on the phone, explained i wanted it for growing shiitake and it had to be clean and free of chemicals, mostly dust and a few bits and shavings.

if i can find it, i'll post the address. if not, use a search engine (that's where i got them).

picked up two trashbags full of maple sawdust today, for free! woo! i bet shipping alone would count for alot of this.. might be worth it if you had a pickup-truck or something to take a drive somewhere.. this place sells it for $.20/cubic foot.. seems common, good luck!
