Shiitake Log (literally!) Mycoporn!
    #7740866 -

Hi everyone!
This is my first dabble into the wonderful world of mycology
Although, it's only a shiitake log that I bought
So far, three little guys have popped up!
I'm planning on taking some prints
Giving some away, possibly making some agar wedges to give away as well
any takers?
Eventually, I want to do a larger scale shiitake grow
:smileyfrog:

Enjoy the mycoporn!

These were taken on the 8th. The log was soaked in cold, cold water for a little over 24 hours last Monday, the 3rd.

These are from the 9th

And these are from today!

It has been so amazing to watch these little funguys pop up and grow.

I'm a little hazy as to when I should pluck these suckers.
I think they still have a little ways to grow, right?

thanks for taking a look!
:smileyfrog:

:edit: here they are on the 11th (today)

I plucked the largest mushroom off a little while ago. There was a small deposit of spores on the bin I have the log placed on. I'm taking a spore print on some tinfoil of this fella.

cool, it takes longer for shiitakes to grow on logs... but i hear its worth the wait (bigger and tastier)

awesome!! Are you keeping the log indoors?
I have grown shiitakes on wood chips cakes before and last season i plugged this little piece of oak for the hell of it. The mycelium is growing out of it but I picked the bark off of it last year not really thinking about it. Bark is a key player to pin formation with shiitake. I have a few bigger oak chunks that I will plug with oyster and shiitake in a few weeks

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

yep, the log is being kept indoors
i am very surprised at how fast it started to fruit

bark certainly does seem to be very key

anyone have any idea why this is?
RR, i know you know!
ya know?

I would imagine the bark serves as sort of a 'casing', holding a high humidity protected environment where the primordia forms. There might also be some beneficial(to the fungi) bacteria in the wood/bark interface.

This thread is 3 years and 8 months old. Posting to threads that are
this old is known as thread necromancy and is usually frowned upon.

Another thing that is frowned upon is asking for hand outs and begging, FYI.

Like I suggested before brother, purchase a syringe from a vendor,
or wait until you can participate in the marketplace and trade for
a culture.

Hey man, it was on the first page here. Do I know why?? NO! I just clicked on the page and posted thinking this was recent. Sorry about that. In his first post he says he was giving away free agar wedges. Don't treat me like a punk please.

I was just pointing out some finer points of forum etiquette that you
are clearly not aware of. Take it how you want it pal, I have spent
the afternoon giving you advice and guidance and even offering to
trade you a culture. If you feel I am treating you like a punk you
are wrong.

Always check the post date before replying to a thread, sorry that me
trying to help you avoid getting flammed over these kinds of things
by other members has come off as offensive

You being a noob I figured I would pass along some forum rules that
you may not have known about. Take it how you want as I said above.
