faster shiitake log production?
    #4052456 -

I have just started doing alot of reading on log production and was wondering why it wouldn't be possible to get faster immediate production with non-oak logs (and maybe use oak for longer duration harvests)? From what I have read, it seems that what makes oak the best choice is also what causes it to take the longest to produce. Therefore, why not mix in some faster starter logs (perhaps maple etc.) with the oak to balance out the production? I realize that these other logs will need to be replaced sooner but wouldn't the benefits of faster production and perhaps more frequent yields be worth it (or am I overlooking something)?

Thanks for any insight on this!

alder/poplar/cottonwood/birch... these woods will go a lot faster..

i live in vermont, people who grow here grow on maple, oak is hard to come by..

when thinking of colonization times, think of how fast the wood grows... seems the quicker growing species are also the ones that degrade the fastest...

also something to consider is that fact that oak can live for hundreds of years.. while poplar/alder/birch maybe 40-50..
these oak's are a asset to the forest... they have all been cut here in vermont.. thats why we dont have them anymore.. kind of a shame really..

Thanks, that's very helpful info. Where I live in NE Fl, woods of all type are being slaughtered due to out of control population growth. This is unfortunate, however, the goods news is that I would be salvaging what would otherwise be wasted. The best choices here are water and red oak, sweet gum, and red maple.

here in TN oak is literally a waste wood. i see it cut and shoved over and generally left to waste everywhere. i also see millions of oak groves everywhere. i wasn't aware the situation was different elsewhere in the country.
