Is it possible to incubate shiitake logs indoors?

Hi,

I?m a longtime lurker, but a first time poster. I have (limited) experience with the indoor/outdoor cultivation of pleurotus and the indoor cultivation of shiitake on sterilized sawdust/bran.

I have come across several online sources suggesting that wooden logs inoculated with pleurotus spawn can be placed indoors for the spawn run. I have TMC and GGMM, but haven?t found anything suggesting that this is a safe course of action. I prefer using pasteurized straw for pleurotus, but I would like to try logs for others, including shiitake and reishi.

My question is: Since my area is experiencing freezing temperatures at the present time, is it possible to incubate shiitake logs indoors without experiencing significant contamination? Does anyone have experience incubating logs indoors? My skeptical brain tells me that the logs will contaminate indoors, I would be very happy if somebody were to convince me otherwise.

The biggest problem you would be looking at is the time of year your logs would be cut at. Success relies on your logs being cut when the sugar is rising, i.e., in the late winter and early spring. Also, if you cut then, the bark will stay on your logs. Good for hydration and slowing possible contaminates.

Feb, I found myself wondering the same thing last fall. I contacted the folks at fungi perfecti and they said that indoor incubation was fine. The only problem I had is that I did not have a convient way to keep the logs at the correct moisture content and also maintain good aeration to keep the contams down. My suggestion would be to soak the logs periodically in the tub or something, and to cover them only lighly with a semi permeable tarp of some sort. Though I did not do Shitake in this manner, I did do some king oyster and trametes, and they both fruited this fall.

Thank you creekfarmer and r05c03 for the replies, I'll fire up my chainsaw and get to work. I?m planning on waxing the ends and misting occasionally to ensure moisture.

The trick is to let the outside of the logs dry out, but not the inside. I would soak them (bathtub?) for several hours about once a week then put them in a draft free spot that stays cool. Once they dry on the outside I'd probably put them in plastic bags that have holes punched in them (for some light airflow) and leave them alone until next soak. If you cut the logs green and spawn them you could try weighing them. That is one way to keep track of the relative water content. If you keep the weight up to about where it started you'll be fairly sure not to over soak them.

Make sure you don't cut your logs until late Feburary or early March.

Cutting logs in fall is optimal. Had success from a Autumn cut. Sugars were nice and rich due to leaves falling off for the season change.
