Ok, I've taken a look at your post. Please bare in mind that I'm no expert on gyms, all I can do is follow a key (I used this one) The species I come up with, based on your pics and description, would be g. luteofolius. However, I didn't find any information in your post that could rule out these being g. aeruginosus. In fact, the habitat you found them in (deciduous wood) makes g. aeruginosus a bit more likely. I can't say for sure which these are.

As to the amanita: a. pantherina is a possibility, although the coloration of the cap seems a bit off. Amanitas can be a bitch to ID and I couldn't venture a better guess here.

So you id-ed it to g. spectabilis or do you draw this conclusion from the similarity of the above pic with your finds?

lol the pic but, description wise too aeruginosus are suppose to smell starchy these are flowery smelling and coon said that they smell flowery.

They have a very distinct smell that I would say is more lemon/citrusy than flowery. It is strong and spicy, not light and delicate.

Well they arent jack O lanterns, I definately think they are gyms. I would eat them based on all the info you've shown. Even just form the photo's they look like gyms, then with the smell and bitter flavour- but the main point being the spore print, I dont really see how they'd be anything else.

There arent too many here who are experienced with gyms, typically its shroomeydan who confirms them all! Which is why your ID is taking so long. :grin:

i had just taken a sip of orange juice when i took a nibble to taste em and it was so gross tasting well as i said coon PMed me

Regarding the PC question. With smaller models, they usually do not have a gauge feature. I had a 10qt and there was no pressure guage. I had to read the manual to find out that its maximum psi was 12. Yours is probaby a similar type, read the manual and box to find out the max psi. If 15psi is the recommended psi, then increase the time required for sterilization. So if it says to PC at 15psi for 45 min, I'd do it at the max (12psi?) for 1 hr - 1 hr 15 min.

Take a spore print. I am not too savvy with Gymnopilus. If the sporeprint is correct, I think it would be safe to say that it certainly is. It definetly has the look of the spectabilis. Spectabilis is considered a group, which means there is some deal of fluctuation with apperance.

The spores should be a bright rusty orange, and the taste should be bitter. I think the only other real look-a-like (apperance wise) would be those in the Pholiotas genus.

I don't know what species of gym he has there,they're appearance is different than mine,but I would say they are definately gym.as far as the flowery smell thats what it reminds me of,or sunny d,I smoke alot so my sense of smell may be a bit off. :shrug:

his aren't spectabilis, by the fibrils/squamules i'm guessing G. aeruginosus.

the fibrils definately had a different appearance from mine,and the zone between the viel ring and the cap looked different, too.more of an erupting out look if you know what I mean?

well as i had said a while back spore print is oragne/brown they are gyms that is a fact. the question is really what type but it doesnt matter much they are what they are and they know along with the tree that it was growing from. and if gyms are as tough as they are suppose to be they will grow again.the mycilum is probally inside the tree its an absorbion heterotroph as long as that tree is alive its gona suck that life out of it lol.

they arent luteofolius, just mentioning that.

the closest thing i can see them being if they are active is spectibilis.

inactive or active, those gyms, theres NO NEED to be ripping the mycelia up from the ground. you dude, should know that by now considering how long you've been registered here on the shroomery. c'mon now man thats a typical NOOBIE move right there :rolleyes:. you should know better than that :nono:
