A nice looking Big Laughing Gym.

Found this outside my friends house, growing on a tree stump in the lawn, has a nice bulb to it, with a few pins also. I've used the calculator, and it reccommended 40g wet, but other sources (ie people) say 100g+, which is it?

So nice and round, I think it's a bit small though.

Those definately look like some type of gym, know the species? you said big laughing, so i'm guessing spectabilis? Personally i've never found any, i've been looking for a few years with no luck. Great find though! as for dosage, sorry, I can't help you, but if i find any this season, i'll find a nice strong dosage peace

If the you have pins that are bruising blue, the lower number sounds good, maybe even a little high.
If you have mushrooms that have opened all the way it's hard to say.

I will take a spore print when it opens. I didn't know that laughing gyms were specifically spectabilis. As for the species I have no idea, there ins't much info on New Zealand species, and anything we have is likely to be imported from America anyway. I don't know what the stump is, but it looks like a conifer.
As to pholiota the caps are definately not slimey, and the pins and stems are very much "Gymy", but as I say a spore print will get to the heart of the matter.

I was just thinking when you said big laughing gym, you must have the same field guide as me (National Audubon Society field guide to mushrooms for North America) Anyways, in that one they have the big laughing gym and little laughing gym, big being spectabilis, and little being penetrans. Anyone got any comments on this book, any good?

yeah that's a gym. spectabilis . heaps of them around NZ. they will work for ya but expect the stomach rolls...
I would recommend making filtered tea out of them as they taste disgusting and you'll gag if you have to chew/swallow

Haunted do you have an idea of wet and dry weight needed for a level 3? I'm not finding much info, and the calculator seems to be very much on the low side.

yeah I would lean towards the higher level of the scale.. chuck it all in a big pot and boil it down then filter out the sh#t. I know what people say about cooking mushrooms lessening the potency but there is no other option with these ones...
but - although they are a unique mushroom with a feel of their own - there are better options out there buddy!! you gotta be getting desperate when you're contemplating shrooming on these beasts. just wait till you're staring down the barrel of a giant cup of smelly broth...
then again, maybe you'll like the flavour!!

Nice find! I always enjoy Gym photos.
You should try breaking a stem and then putting it in the fridge for 12 hrs. Sometimes Gyms only bruise if they are cold. I also read in another thread that people sometimes identify Gyms by cooking a piece, it should turn green when cooked. Not sure if they meant to boil it or fry it etc.
I'd be willing to trade a print for a print if you have any spare ones.
Happy hunting!

Thanks for that GeorgeM, I'm a big fan of your works.
I was wondering if someone could help me out in regards to photos. When I load them into my gallery here at The Shroomery there is a lot of compression, which can sometimes degrade a good photo. Also I don't know how to upload a photo and not have it appear as a thumbnail, instead like in this page I would rather have the full size picture in my post, how do you guys get around this?
In this case as with others I upload them to photobucket to avoid the associated problems.

there is no more G. spectabilis. that taxon was superseded by G. junonius [and in some forms G. ventricosus] when they where found to be conspecific.
