The ones on the left have a cream colored cap with white stem and brown gills. Found growing together in a yard. Caps are about 2 1/2 inches. Hieght is about 2 to 3 inches. The ones on the right are 3 to 4 inches in hieght with brownish or cream colored woody stems. Caps are 3/4 to an inch across. Conal shaped cap brownish to a biege gills. Found in yard around a Ferry Ring on an old stand of a tree(conifer). Are these Pans?

The ones on the left are some kind of Agaricus. >on an old stand of a tree(conifer). Those could be Galerina sp., DEADLY poisonous!! Don?t eat them! Panaeolus species don?t grow on wood, they grow on dung.

Thanks Anno. Are the ones on the left edible? Cause when I was young my grandmother and I used to go in the yard and pick those same ones and sautee them and eat them.... Was that a bad idea?

Most of the around 50(probably more) Agaricus species are edible, the one that ate not have a strange, non appealing fragrance and taste. If their fragrance is like the on of the commercial button mushrooms, then they are edible. After a talk with some knowledgable people the general consensus is the mushrooms on the right are 100% not Panaeolus, but likely not Galerina either, since the Galerinas grow in autumn. According to those people it might be Collybia sp., not edible, non active. Oh, please don?t cross post the same thread in several forums next time. This forum is the correct one for this topic, no the Mushroom Pictures forum.

They could be Psytherlla(sp) too. The speices in that genus look very similar to pans, but grow on wood. None are active though. -Gumby

Yea but a real nice one though. I'm interested in all living things. I should go down to the place I got horse shit and look around. Been having some wet days and weeks. I thought I'd never see a mushroom again. The edible ones are making a hell of nice thick blackish brown print.

Mushrooms are everywhere. I usually need only 30 min of walking in the woods to find several species that are unknown to me.
