psilocybes in northeast
    #4089642 - 04/23/05 09:41 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I have two books that list psilocybes as being present in areas that are unmentioned elsewhere. George Barron's Mushrooms of Northeast North America lists liberty caps as being present in the northeast, as well as a field guide by Alan Bessette that states P. baeocystis can be found in the NE. Both are relatively recent, published in 90's, & I was wondering how valid their claims are. Did they actually find these species firsthand, or did they cite a secondary source? Any opinions would be appreciated. The more known mushrooms of the area were also listed, such as P. subbs, P. Caerulipes, & Gymnopilus, but seeing libs & baeocystis in these books was surprising.

Wow, P. Baeocystis in the N.E. Hard to imagine. The Baeocystis I found years ago in the Puget sound area were in conditions I can't quite picture in th N.E.

Psilocybe baeocystis is indigenous to the PNW from Bandon, Oregon to British Coloumbia, and from the Cascades to the Olympics in Washington and in Oregon to the coast.

It does not grow in the NE.

Liberty caps have been reported in the literature in northern New York and in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Foundland and as far north as Quebec.

If you find baeos. in the NE please contact your local Jesus and ask him for forgiveness for disturbing a rare phenomenon in the middle of its life cycle. Liberty Caps are easier to find in the NE though no one has ever (good to remember asa far as hope goes) found libs. and posted them here at the shroomery. Godspeed...

MItchnast picks them every fall in Nova Scotia and posts images here. Redbone collected them in NY and in Virgina and deposited them in herbariums in late 1989.

Gyms and Muscaria are common enough up here that you don't have to worry about psilocybes. Liberty caps are abundant Down East Maine, but very few people know about this.

holy thread necromancy indeed. p. lib, please don't go pulling up threads from 3 years ago unless there's a good reason for it.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
