Yes, take new pictures.
Solution will come in way or another.

Here are some wide open caps (largest ones 3,5 centimeters = 1,37795276 inches), do you think that all of them are semilanceata?
why do they have so open hat and the ones that I have seen seem just to be closing their hats by age and the hat grows much taller bell shape? Maybe I just have not seen old enought specimens.

richard420, thanks for the information. Fortunately, I already know this. All beginners have that stage when they pick wrong panaeolus specimens consider they are psilocybe. Fortunately, I passed this stage a year ago. It's enough to find a real psilocybe once and you'll never mix it with panaeolus or any other genus. Panaeolus genus is well known for me now. Pans have fragile stems and caps, haven't a nipple, haven't the specific psilocybe smell. I repeat again, my mushrooms were tigth, stems could be easily wrapped around a finger, they had specific psilo smell and bruising. And the main thing, I tripped of them.
You can't feel photographed mushrooms by your fingers and can't smell them, you can just believe me or not. But you can see those sharp nipples even on that poor webcam shots. Pans never have such a nipple:

And again, all five mushrooms grew from the single point, from the same mycelium. They can't be "one a lib, other a pan", as some people here consider.

In the first post of this thread I can only see one liberty cap. It´s in the last photo.

The ones in the posting above.. hmm, the dark brown stalks are not a good sign. Liberty caps get darker when they are wet but the stem colour stay light light brown, looks a bit transparent. However, the photos are of too low quality for a 100% identification.

And Panaeolus stems are not fragile! You can twist them around your finger and they will not snap.

im hoping for replies from people on "the trusted list" too grib.
i think that is the only way for u to realise your mistake.
and just for information grib, i dont know anyone within the shroomery whom i would call a friend, ive only been active on here for the past month. *NooB*

People, believe me, I can distingush a fragile panaeolus from tight and unbreakable psilocybe, I know that specific smell of psilocybes, I'm in doubt about the blue one but I'm ready to confirm under oath those five were libs, I ate them and tripped, Donnerwetter!
If you haven't such a strain in your location that doesn't mean it's not exist.

*wastes breath* obviously u cant tell the difference, if u are identifying mushrooms as libs by the smell and the fact that the caps have a nipple then something is very wrong.
u tripped from those 5 mushrooms? thats the biggest pile of rubbish ive ever heard in my life.
maybe u were so desperate to get high from them that u convinced yourself they were libs. placebo effect.

Grib_iz_Pitera said:
I hope I have a chance to do more quality photos of such mushrooms, instead of that hazy webcam shots. In case you will not recognize they are libs, we're living on different planets and having different logic..

i wish u luck... ive been waiting for high quality images of inactive pans for AGESSSS... even with the best digital camera on earth u wont make those pans into libs... lol

lib mower? i'll have u know that i have great respect for my picking environment... thats why it fruits so well year after year.
and dont talk to me about forum rules please, im sure one of the main aims of the shroomery is to stop the spread of misinformation about mushrooms...

dirty tactics sometimes have to be used grib. and i might add "childish" to that too! im sickened that ive let your BS drag me down to this level.

i still dont trust your pictures grib, have u any more that make them look just a bit more like libs?
id suggest u take a step back, about 1 year infact, to that time when u thought u could tell the difference between those 2 species...
i can totally understand why u think they are the same, the same mushrooms grow in conjunction with libs where i pick and sometimes i have to look twice to confirm that they are not libs.

ive seen plenty of pans like the ones in your pics that also displayed a slight nipple on the caps.
also ive seen them growing right next to bone fide libs.
im just guessing here, but i think that mycelium of different mushroom species will happily share a common area.
i find a few different species growing right there next to my libs.

yes all your libs are the real deal... even the large specimens.
i cant explain why the largest libs have very wide, flattened caps, but the same is true with the libs i pick.
i found some with wide, flat, wavy caps yesterday. large and small.

these ones are particularly wavy and flat.

ok i'm going to stay at somewhat of a distance here because i've seen this drama play out between members many times and i can predict that you two will probably come to a compromise in the end and might even get along once this blows over. for now, it's just a battle of pride muddling some potential good mushroom conversation.

for what one man's interpretation is worth, read my relevant posts thus far in these semilanceata threads.

what is most important is a recognition of what constitutes and what does not constitute P. semilanceata and an avoidance of the missidentification of other fungi as such.

if a temperate mushroom:

1a.) grows in grassland from soil and/or the dead blades/roots of the grasses or sedge: 2.
1b.) time for another trip to the field

2a.) posesses spores which are clearly purple-brown in deposit: 3.
2b.) time for another trip to the field

3a.) has a pileus which is inherently blue to bluegreen in color but does not bruise this color uppon handling, which tends to develop yellow tones in age, does not have a seperable gelataenous pellicle which can be readily seperated from the cortex of the pileus: Stropharia aeruginosa/cyanea group, time for another trip to the field
3b.) has flesh which bruises blue / blue-green uppon handling, particularly in the base of the stipe in young specimens, had a pliant, rubbery textured stipe when fresh and has a pellicle which can be readily seperated from the pileus: 4.

4a.) has a persistent annulus or annular zone: P. fimetaria/subfinetaria
4b.) does not have a persistant annulus or prominant annular zone: 5.

5a.) has a stipe which is pliant and can usualy be wound around the finger wthout breaking: P. semilanceata
5b.) has a stipe which is rigid and fragile and breaks readily when wound round thefinger: P. strictipes

now, this these keys are not perfect, nor complete but these are the significant features for the macroscopic identification of these species in general, though i don't believe P. fimetaria occurrs in europe and i'm not sure about P. strictipes.

beyond this question, i don't care to be involved in this argument. we are all human, proud and flawed and most of us can be friends anyway if the goal is resolution of conflict .

peace and love,
concrete.

[edit: too many typos, i can't keep up...]

Okey, wotaueat, guys, at least it is starting look like a serious conversation, not throwing shit to each other, like it was before.
I hope we'll be friends, at least we are not enemies anymore?

I'll try to find such mushrooms in my field this weekend and do decent photos with pellicle detached, stem wrapped, etc... I aware only such photos could solute all the questions.. Damn, there was a night frost a few days ago, I'm not sure are mushrooms still grow..

You can't imagine guys what the damn work is proving your opinion using a foreign language, repeling that baiting.. That's a titanic work, can you reveal some respect at least for this fact. I'm almost played out... I should accunmulate some stamina and return with photos.. No a reply until a photo..

why am i just seeing this now?
the following are liberty caps

well if u believe those 5 mushrooms are libs then good luck to ya.
i agree that all your photos are libs so i dont know why u commit to those others ones...
take a closer look cos your the only one apart from grib who thinks so...
i'd say 2 libs possibly and 3 pans...

those are the same mushrooms in both pics.

if they are anything, they are not pans. not with that viscid pellicle when fresh which is quite visable, you see that purple tinge on the fresh ones? that is because the pellicle is translucent, and the spores forming in the gills are purple.

if they arent semilancaeta, they are at LEAST psilocybes.

just like this

it is how they occur in taller grasses in wetter weather

go look at my gallery man, im perfectly up to date on the various shapes, sizes and variations of libs.
heres wot i have found over the last month >>>LIBERTY CAPS
i dont know how u can say there is a visible pellicle from those pics, yes im also aware of wot that is.
the first shot they are fresh, nothing visible there.
and in the second shot they are half dried.

i can see your point about how the spores are showing, the rim of the cap even looks slightly purple...
but the point is this: are they libs?

id really like to know wot they are anyway so i hope he gets some good info and spore prints them next time so maybe we can really id them...

it would be nice if they are something active, cos i know for sure that the same mushrooms grow beside the libs where i pick... they have purple gills and are nearly the same colour as libs. some even display a nipple as gribs do. but they never go into my picking bag.

gees even if they turn out to be libs im willing to admit it

yeah? but i'm on the list baby, have been for years

lets all be cool, you both made mistakes, i diddnt follow the drama, but i think a round of humble peace pie is in order for the house.

the only thing that i would really question, how adnexed are the gills?

the one major lookalike among psilocybes in the same habitat has partially adnate gills that free up with maturity.  it tends to have a globose cap with a nipple, i will find pics, hang on. (psilocybe semiglobata and it's variations)

Quote:

from what i can see: agreed. one can not expect all specimens of a species to fall within the classic phenotype/morphology range.

if they are another active grassland psilocybe it's nice to be able to find a distinguishing feature to put your finger on [to put a specific name on or determine it is taxanomicaly distinct], but if it's a question of which species out of two close relatives the difference is generaly of secondary importance.

hmm, cant find a pic i made up to settle this very argument once, ill just have to make up a new one, HAAAANG on.

youre lucky im not drinkin!

and you know very well its too late to prove the mushrooms have a separable pellicle, you knew that when you suggested it. so no complain'n 'bout me editin', It doesn't show up if you do it in the first minute of the posts existance, the list is strictly a badge of approval. It carries no perk, except some mutual respect. most of the people on it hardly bother to come around anymore.
