Liberty Caps? ID please. (Sporeprint)
    #4567089 - 08/22/05 06:16 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Hi folks!

Need help identifying this shroom...I think it's a libcap, but want to be sure, of course.

Found it on a wet meadow, and next to cow-manures.

Haven't made sporeprints yet, but will do that soon.

They didn't turn blue when touching them though.  :frown:

Im gonna give the mods a break and do it for them:

A good picture of the mushrooms is invaluable, but not required.
Along with the pictures YOU ARE REQUIRED to provide the following data:

* Habitat (where [woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude] and what [soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?)] does it grow on)
* Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
* Characteristics of the stem (length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
* Characteristics of the cap (diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
* Spore print color (very important!)
* Color that the mushroom bruises
* Scent of the mushroom
* Anything else you might find important

The mushroom on the far right is definitely Psilocybe semilanceata.

The one on the right is most likely a lib, but take a spore print to be sure. I don't think the other two are. Besides, there's no point in eating them, as you only have 1 possible liberty cap.

i would suggest a high probability of an affirmative. i was skeptical intil i notied the strongly adnexed gills.
many non-active psilocybes are adnate
the middle one is probably an inactive pan tho

Yea...thanks for the replies. I've dried the shrooms now (found a lot :smile: ), and the most of them turned to a gold color. Some beacame dark brown, and I guess those aren't libcaps.

By the way, the stem can be wrapped around a finger.

The sporeprints are OK soon. You'll hear from me......

Now I've made sporeprints...

The colors aren't right in this pic. The real color of the sporeprint is kind of dark purple-brown.

Is it a chance that it might be a lookalike?

The one on the right clearly displays the gelatinous pellicle, and do you notice the thick stem? The middle one lacks these two qualities, and appears to be some type of panaeolus.

As you should know, never take anothers ID of a mushroom as the only factor. It is you after all who will eat them. The middle mushroom is not a liberty cap. Note a few things here. The lack of a 'nipple' is always a good sign that it is NOT a lib. When fresh, the nipple looks like it has jelly in it and even the cap has a 'gel' like appearance. The lighter colored stem is also a good indicator (as compared to the non-lib / middle). Next time you have both like this, try this. Take one mushroom in each hand, and snap/squish the mushroom a few times. Libs are very tough. I bet the mushroom in the middle would be flimsy and nowhere near the strength of the Lib. If you are ever in doubt, since mushrooms can vary so much in appearence, simple: Don't eat it.

"The lack of a 'nipple' is always a good sign that it is NOT a lib."

not true

liberty caps can look like just about anything. conic, flat wavy, even convex they can be perfectly semiglobalar, or
campalunate.

ideally tho they ought to be spear like.
semilanceata = almost spear like

the translucent separable pellicle is always a good indicator. but for them most part, habitat and conditions are going to be the strongest tool you can use.

if youre in the right habitat at the right time. libs pretty much look different than all other mushrooms except for a few non active psilocybes.

some mycenas have a simmilar shape and habitat, but the gills and color are wrong
