from what i can see: agreed. one can not expect all specimens of a species to fall within the classic phenotype/morphology range.

if they are another active grassland psilocybe it's nice to be able to find a distinguishing feature to put your finger on [to put a specific name on or determine it is taxanomicaly distinct], but if it's a question of which species out of two close relatives the difference is generaly of secondary importance.

interesting, wot other psilocybes occur in russia? is that where grib is from?

and you know very well its too late to prove the mushrooms have a separable pellicle, you knew that when you suggested it.  so no complain'n 'bout me editin', It doesn't show up if you do it in the first minute of the posts existance, the list is strictly a badge of approval. It carries no perk, except some mutual respect.  most of the people on it hardly bother to come around anymore.

i'm not sure of the distribution of even the common published Psilocybes in europe. then there's the less likely possibility of uncommon or unpublished species. to be quite honest, wthout complete analysis of the macro and microscopic morphologic features, you can never be 100% sure of the species, it just comes down to whether it matters from a practical standpoint.

most of the time, most identification is only made to the extent that there is a practical reason to be more specific [e.g. closely related members of a species complex like P. pelliculosa/silvatica]. if two spcimens are highly similar and there is no practical impetus to delineate them, the only real reason to do so is academic curiosity.

this is in contrast to the situation where there may be a practical application, such as seperating an inactive member is Stropharia from an active member of Psilocybe, or even an inactive member of Psilocybe from the latter.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

hmmm agreed, it is hard to find information about distribution within europe.

and agreed that it dosent matter exactly wot they are, so long as they pass as psilocybes.

now theres a few inactive Psilocybes that mimic libs,
they pretty much all fall under the category of those with gills that are ALMOST adnate. meaning they are attached down the stipe only by a thin fibrous membrane and are only truly attached at the place where stipe meets the cap. the membrane doesn't really hold if moved.
liberty caps are always sharply adnexed.

The look alikes include (but are not limited to) Psilocybe inquilina, (and the crobula var.) and Stopharia (psilocybe) Semiglobata. nether of which have a separable pellicle, and the later doesnt show purple through the cap.
heres some stropharia semiglobata

heres some psilocybe inquilina

Heh, first time I actually clicked on this thread.

Unfortunately, I've never experienced the joys of picking Liberty caps, and that really does hinder my ability to correctly identify them, since the characteristics viewed when actually in your hand, seem to stand out more once viewed in photos.

Obviously the first two photos are something completely different. I would lean towards the ID of Stropharia.

Before reading Mitchnast's rebuttal, I was actually thinking that the characteristics of the second series of mushrooms were indeed Psilocybe, and damn near closely related to semilanceata.

Liberty caps are known to have whitish stems with brown bases, sometimes turning a tinge of green in old age. The caps as well are known to go from a darker color to a pale yellow/buff.

The other thing that I found interesting is that these are known to be found in Russia, which makes sense, but, never realized it.  I would say that the three with the larger, rounder caps in the photo are questionable, but, someone like Mitchnast would know better. The others with the Obvious pointed umbo are definetly libs. (IMO!!)

I just want to add that the other day I saw the post from urwhatueat, assuming that the specimens in question were not LIBS.

While I am not against the act of ruling out Psilocybe species (because it could do not harm), I just want to add that although it would be difficult to give a positive ID on those, I would say they are libs off the record. I've seen libs which looked just like those. They do have a nipple as well albeit hard to see.

Again, the ruling-out of a specimen as being edible/active can never do harm. Only false ID's as being edible/active could do harm, so althought I think they are probably libs, I would have to move to urwhatueat's side of the court in that we should assume they are not, because they cannot be IDed positively.

Oh yes, and one specimen was correctly IDed as Stroph. aeruginosa by several people I think. That one is definitely not a lib.

Thats amazing - The latter ones i've been avoiding picking for years but never knew they were an inactive psilocybe. The former ones seem pretty hard to sepeare from the larger liberty caps, what a shame. ulthough I am 100% i've never picked any of those by accident because all of the liberty caps i've picked have been exceptionally strong.

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but its a damn good one.
