Smoking Aluminum?

I hear that smoking with an aluminum foil bowl is bad for you. Could someone please explain why this is bad for you? links, pics, ect would be awesome.

Aluminum has been thought for some time now to cause alzheimers. It also has a relatively low boiling point (you could inhale Al vapors) compared to other metals which you may smoke with. Also, many aluminum materials are covered with a thin polymer coating (such as aluminum soda cans i believe).

I just did a quick search and came up with pretty much nothing, although i could have tried a lot harder. But basically i've heard it may increase the risk of Alzheimer's, although i have no idea if that's true or not. I don't think a whole lot is known about that, or what harmful effects aluminum may have. The only thing i'm fairly certain of is that absorbing aluminum into your body can't be good for you, no matter how you do it.

Maybe smoking out of aluminum isn't that bad, but even then why would you want to? I understand sometimes your desperate and that's all that's available, but your much better off getting a pipe. It's easier, probably less harmful, and a hell of a lot nicer. You don't even need a nice one, just a small metal (or glass, depending on what you use it for) pipe can be cheap and effective.

Everytime i use my hookah i smoke aluminum. You cover the bowl with aluminum foil and then put a coal on it.

well i dont smoke pot. i smoke salvia, so i need a high temp and a pipe just wont do.


about hookas, i am looking into that. i reeaally want a hooka so me and my girlfriend can smoke together from one source.
ill do some more research about aluminum, and illlet you gguys know.

I'm not trying to be difficult here, but i really don't see why a pipe wouldn't work for that. Of course a bong would probably be better, and not as harsh. I've never had the chance to smoke Salvia out of a pipe, so i can't say for sure but you could always use a torch lighter for a higher temperature. Another idea that just came to mind would be hot knives, although that sounds fairly messy and difficult with Salvia. Actually on second thought that might even be kinda dangerous, so maybe only consider that if you have someone else to do it for you. And i've never heard anyone mention that before, so there's probably a good reason for that, but at least it's something.

I'm just really curious now though, how are you using aluminum foil to burn Salvia at a higher temperature than you would get with a pipe or stuff like that?

Buy a splash guard for a frying pan then you have enough fine gauge mesh to last you for years..
Mesh sockets give the best pull for a grav bong too if you make it well.

We had two mesh sockets that lasted us ages..
Say goodbye to fucking about changing the foil all the time...

Right, I smoke out of hookahs the same way. Since you are filtering the smoke through cold water in your hookah, it is not likely that the trace amounts of Al (with a high boiling point relative to the weed/sashish) would stay in the vapor phase (Al would be filtered out). Also, it would probably take a while for Al poisoning to show up, especially with the trace amounts that would be inhaled by smoking.

When i smoke salvia, i have to use a torch lighter, which makes the smoke hot, even through a water bong, if i smoked it through a pipe, then i would burn myself:sad:

i think more research for a better bowl metal is needed...

I've smoked salvia out of both a pipe and a bong. I Prefer the bong, but the pipe works well too, it just tastes much fouler, and harsher. So you can use a glass pipe just fine. I never understood why people get so technical with the heat, when they're already smoking a high extraction amount anyway.

Besides, the stronger the airflow, the hotter the combustion, you can use a bic and get good results with salvia through a bong.

I see your point there, it's not even that hard to burn yourself with a normal flame lighter and a pipe. I wouldn't even want to know how bad Salvia and a torch lighter is like that. Although from what i remember, it was mostly the heat of the smoke that bothered me, where as weed or tobacco smoke feels heavier, if that makes any sense.

So, i still don't know exactly why you would use foil. I'm assuming it's for some sort of gravity bong, which would be homemade? I know pretty much nothing about that, so if it works well for you then just nevermind me i guess. To me though, a water bong still sounds best. I believe the bowl/slide is usually glass or some other metal, so that eliminates your aluminum problem, and maybe using water with some ice in it would help. I don't know, but i'd imagine under those conditions the smoke is going to be fairly hot no matter what you do.

I guess glass is something to consider, although probably hard to find a bowl-like piece of glass. Maybe they make glass funnels? If all you need is a bowl then maybe you could just get a slide from a bong and work around that? Or possibly even something ceramic? I think i've heard of people using some sort of plumbing pipe to make bongs out of. It doesn't really have to be metal, anything that won't melt or give off harmful substances when heated should work.
