Spores and thermal death
    #400805 - 09/22/01 09:41 PM (21 years, 13 days ago)

Question for the experienced:

We know that mycelium suffers a thermal death at 106; my question is, is there any "thermal death" for spores? As in, spore prints? Short of vaporizing on the surface of the sun, that is.....if left in rooms that reach 100 and over, even to the magic 106 limit of mycelium, will the spores be rendered inactive/dead?

Thanks.....

well, i dont have hard facts but an anecdote...

HQ's jackal drove his car thru some godawful heat - from florida to california. he parked the car overnite for stops in some pretty hot places... and when they met up in phoenix arizona, it was over 100 degrees where they parked the car. his deodorant melted. literally turned into a white liquid that poured all over the parking lot...

and he forgot he had his spore library in the car with him. lotsa prints...

but they still worked. every print tried has resulted in healthy mycelia. dont take this as proof you should keep them in a hot place, its just an anecdote. and they wouldnt try it again, not for all the tea in china :) well, maybe some white tea.

anywho, store em in the fridge. no use in getting nervous about it.

* * * * B U M P * * * *

Anyone else have any thoughts on this, or anecdotal evidence or knowledge on this subject? It is one that I, at least, have never seen asked on here, and it is not a subject that is addressed anywhere that I am familiar with.

My friend is in this situation and he wonders what his chances are, what he can expect.

I know that thermal death for spores including mold and yeast is 121c or 249f.

thats the closest information I can find as a source to back up what I know.
