I'm about to attempt my first shroom growing project and decided to use this guide for its inexpensive aspect.. Is this a good tek for beginners? Should I go with cakes? I dont want to hassle but if it'll be better I don't mind.. The guide section says beginners can get decent results but I want the opinion from people who've done this before.. thanks for the input...

the tek could have been written better. as far as his substrate recipie, it's as good as anybodys. as far as his casing method - it leaves much to be desired. he claims that the soil will act as a humid microclimate for the mycelium, which is what all casings do in fact do.. unfortunately, it isn't humid enough for most people and it ends up drying out or just not pinning. if you do use this method i would recommend a terrarium for your casing.
but another bad thing about it is that it uses soil for the casing layer and 50% soil for the bottom layer of the casing which brings huge potential to contamination as opposed to say a verm only casing.
my advice to you is to go ahead and use the wizard's method for the jars. just make sure you be as sterile as possible since you don't a have pressure cooker. always wash your hands and add a layer of dry verm on top of each substrate jar before sterilization, this will help to avoid contamination since the verm doesn't have any nutrition for falling spores to feed on (note: make sure you inoculate into the substrate and not the dry verm layer on top).
after you have fully colonized jars, you "should" do a cake method (according to many experienced growers, the only way to start is with cakes).. well i say fuck that and do a casing 'cause they're easy (easier in my opinion) and will increase yields. so after you get your colonized jars, check out --> Casing for Dummies. good shit i tell ya
