Don't m ove suddenly, maintain eye contact and back away slowly. I'm pretty sure that that's what the signs said when I was in the mountains in Colorado. I never ran into a bear though, so I don't know how well that works.

really.. you are supposed to back away slowly.. while talking calmy to the bear and perhaps waving your arms. This is assuming the bear has spotted you. NEVER take off running. Unless you are facing a grizzly.. in which case playing dead might be your best bet. If it's a black bear and it attacks you.. fight back. But don't fight a grizzly. Unless you have hardcore bear mace and perhaps a shotgun.;

Try to make yourself look bigger, by holding camping equip, etc. over your head, also try to make a lot of noise while walking through bear country to avoid a confrontation in the first place.... then mace their asses.
