I saw commercials for that show. I gathered that the guy had been eaten and that the show was going to be a documentary about his life, his passion for bears, and his untimely end.
The second I saw video that he shot where he is a few feet away from some bears and he is talking to them...I literally screamed at the TV "YOU DUMBFUCK!".
Does anybody deserve to die such a horrific death? No. Did the guy have it coming though? Yes.

There is an audio tape of him and his girlfriend being attacked and eaten by a bear, but it has never been released to the public that I know of. The lens cap was on during the entire attack, so there is only audio.
I'm pretty sure there's pics on the net of his remains, after they found the kill site.

That scene is wild, man. With Werner Herzog listening to the tape, but you don't get to hear it. Vry powerful filmmaking decision right there.

Yeah the scene of him listening to the tape was really powerful. Especially when he puts his hand up to his face and asks her to just stop the recording.

The guy was an idiot, and probably did more to the detriment of those bears than he helped them. I agree with oDin and others here that he lasted alot longer than he should have. I can only hold very limited respect for someone with such a distorted view of the wilderness.
It was obvious the guy was completely self-absorbed and living in a fantasy world. Like when he was being followed around by the foxes... it was obvious he had been feeding them. It was pretty disgusting
The audio isn't destroyed, but it was given to the friends and family of timothy... all of whom will probalby never share it with us. The only reason we'd want to hear it anyway is for shock value, theres no real purpose to listen to a man being eaten alive.

I caught parts of this on TV the other night.
At first, I was expecting a docu along the lines of the "Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill" -- (I highly recommend you watch this one also). However, within a few moments of watching this one - it was clear that this guy was off his rocker and insane.
One of the parts that stands out the most, is him crouching down over a pile of fresh bear crap, holding his hands over it saying "I can feel it, it was inside of her, it was a part of her" and rambling off like he was having a very intimate experience with the bear because he was feeling the warmth coming off of its poo.
The guy is insane and has lost the plot - it seems like had had a very difficult life, hit rock bottom - and then re-formed his sense of identity in the most peculiar way.
Its fascinating, but also very sad at the same time. I think this guy needed some serious help.
And, its not like the guy who made this documentary did any sort of ?tricky edits? to make him come off as being a loon ? I thought he approached it from a fairly unbiased point of view and let Timothys footage speak for itself.

Seems like I'm the only one who was totally fascinated by this movie. The fact that the dude was crazy didn't stop me from becoming totally absorbed in the fantasy world of bears and harmony and perfection that he tried to create for himself and capture in his own footage. The guy was NUTS, living in his own little world under all these false assumptions about how perfect and peaceful the world is...but I mean shit almost everyone does that to a certain degree. This guy just took it really far, and didn't edit himself. Didn't ever seem to think it was weird to videotape himself acting like a total jackass. I won't say I think the guy is right or that his views make sense or that he is anything besides a nutcase but like Herzog I think I understand the desire for beauty and perfection and escape that was motivating him.

Nope, I was very fascinated by this movie and thought it was well done, thought provoking and interesting. I only caught bits of the first part, as there were other shows that I was watching. But, watched the last hour and a half on TV right through. I'm tempted to rent the DVD so I can watch the entire thing.
The fact that he was nuts didnt stop me from enjoying it - it increased the interest in the movie. IMO - the movie became more about him, than about the bears - which wasnt what I was expecting.

I don't know why they killed the bear, I would think the guy would have loved to have died like that.
Oh but I bet it was so awful and bloody.

Yeah, he got eaten. I also think he was certifiably insane
Oh, I dunno. I got eaten by my ex last weekend and it wasn't that bad.

I actually read this in readers digest before it was a movie. I told my brother about it and then called him up to tell him when it was on. Crazy motherfucker. They killed the bear because it was going after humans. It went after the guy that brought him in every year and took him out. He said he almost did not make it back to the plane.

"Treadwell had carried bear-repelling spray for self-protection when he first began coming to Alaska to commune with the bears but had stopped carrying it in recent years. The founder of Grizzly People, an organization for bear lovers, Treadwell didn't believe it was right to spray bears with the irritating pepper spray -- even if it caused no long-term injuries to the bears."
now thats rediculous

Why is that ridiculous?
You're going into the bear's home, intruding, then spraying the bear in the eyes with chemicals when it tries to defend its own home.
That'd be like me going to your house, barging in unannounced, then hit you with a taser when you get angry at me.
Note that personally I have no problem with carrying pepper spray for protection against wild animals...but I do understand where Treadwell was coming from.
