That's really not the case. Deer populations are currently huge due to humans. Think of them as huge fucking pigeons with horns.

Bears eat all kinds of shit. It's what they do.

If you ever find bear shit (well, black bear, at least), you'd be surprised how many berry seeds are in it.

huge, i dunno never looked into it, i know around here there used to be alot we would see them every single year in packs of 3,6,8 and one here a massive heard of like 20...this year havn't seen any at all most likely because people got hungry.  actually i think i recall something in my paper about this to the numbers were down so the took some tags away.

secondly even if what you say were true, which is hard to do since we have no records to compare it to, the difference now with humans is we go in and clear out all the weak ones and eat them instead of the bears, the deer end up being smarter and faster because of us.  Also animals were more diverse which brings more avenues of meals.

I will give you the berrys tho, as soon as i read that i remembered hearing about them eating berrys, still humans have cornered off much of the world limiting that as well

The populations are definitely switching up. They seem to be coming out of the woods, and multiplying near agriculture and suburbia.

Our gardens, fields, and orchards provide them with abundant food, just not in their original setting.

i dont even think bears actively hunt deer unless they are literally starving.

theyre mostly scavengers from what i know. bears eating trash is like raccoons eating trash. they do it because its readily available, nutritious, and stinky. we dont pick the nuts and berries off trees where raccoons live, and we dont eat all the small mammals and bugs either. raccoons eat trash because its like the drive through of the animal world.

the only bear that i can think of that would actively hunt more often than scavenge is a polar bear. and thats because they only eat seals.

im talking about the old and the sick, they prolly go after those, as well as the bodies when they die from being old/sick, but now due to hunters being old or sick becomes a much rarer thing, i know bears love fish, and well we sure fucked that up too now didnt we

I think hunters are more apt to nail a healthy deer than one hobbling along.

Especially trophy hunters, with their desire for ginormous bucks.

Edit: A lot of bear food gets introduced by hunting, too. I know the morning after hunting, the gut pile would be almost all gone, except mainly for intestine. There'd be bear track all around it the pile, with coyote tracks making a wider circle.

I thought this was interesting....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grizzly_bear#Diet

Quote:
Although grizzlies are of the order Carnivora and have the digestive system of carnivores, they are actually omnivores, since their diet consists of both plants and animals. They have been known to prey on large mammals, when available, such as moose, deer, sheep, elk, bison, caribou and even black bears. Grizzly bears feed on fish such as salmon, trout, and bass, and those with access to a more protein-enriched diet in coastal areas potentially grow larger than interior individuals. Grizzly bears also readily scavenge food, on carrion left behind by other animals.[13]

The grizzly bears that reside in the American Rocky Mountains are not as large as Canadian or Alaskan grizzlies. This is due, in part, to the richness of their diet, which in Yellowstone consists mostly of whitebark pine nuts, tubers, grasses, various rodents, army cutworm moths and scavenged carcasses. None of these, however, match the fat content of the salmon available in Alaska and British Columbia.

Plants make up approximately 80%–90% of a grizzly bear's diet. Various berries make up a large portion of this. These can include blueberries (Vaccinium cyanococcus), blackberries (Rubus fruticosus), salmon berries (Rubus spectabilis), cranberries (Vaccinium oxycoccus), buffalo berries (Shepherdia argentea), and huckleberries (Vaccinium parvifolium), depending on the environment. Insects such as ladybugs, ants and bees are eaten, but only if they are available in large quantities. At low quantities, the energy gained is not worth the foraging energy output.[14] When food is abundant, grizzly bears will feed in groups. For example, many grizzly bears will visit meadows right after there has been an avalanche or glacier slide. This is due to an influx of legumes, such as Hedysarum, which the grizzlies consume in massive amounts.[15] When food sources become scarcer, however, they separate once again.

In preparation for winter, bears can gain approximately 400 lb (180 kg), during a period of hyperphagia, before going into false hibernation. The bear often waits for a substantial snowstorm before it enters its den: such behaviour lessens the chances that predators will find the den. The dens are typically at elevations above 6,000 feet (1,800 m) on north-facing slopes. There is some debate amongst professionals as to whether grizzly bears technically hibernate: much of this debate revolves around body temperature and the ability of the bears to move around during hibernation on occasion. Grizzly bears can "partially" recycle their body wastes during this period. In some areas where food is plentiful year round, grizzly bears skip hibernation altogether.[citation needed]

Also, i have soooo much more respect for this guy than trophy hunters;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_Treadwell
Quote:
Timothy Treadwell lived among grizzly bears during summer seasons for 13 years. According to Treadwell's book, Among Grizzlies: Living with Wild Bears in Alaska, his mission to protect bears began after he survived a near-fatal heroin overdose in the late 1980s. He confesses in his book that his drug addiction grew from his alcoholism and after that experience, he knew he needed to do something with his life that was meaningful. A lover of all animals since he was a child, he traveled to Alaska to watch bears at the urging of a close friend. Treadwell writes that after his first encounter with a wild bear, he knew he had found his calling in life. Treadwell attributed his recovery from drug and alcohol addictions entirely to his relationship with bears.

Respec!  Him and hid girlfriend got eaten in the end though..

I live in the Yellowstone/Grand Teton area right now because of work, and it's pretty incredible to say the least.

I'm gonna miss it when I leave.

This is really the wildest area in the country. They have everything. Mountain Lions, Grizzlies, Black Bears, Wolves, Bald Eagles, Moose, everything.

It doesn't get better than Northwest Wyoming as far as pure wilderness goes.

I dare anybody to name a wilder part of the country because IT AIN'T GONNA FUCKING HAPPEN.

LOL, no doubt. Alaska for sure.

I should have clarified by saying the "lower 48 states".

No question though Alaska takes the cake.
