i said i would never switch.. but

I said i'd never switch to a dehydrator, but its getting to the point its just not practical to dry with fans and desicants between my finds in the woods and my mushrooms i grow. I bought one at goodwill a month or two ago, but turns out it doesn't work. I have no clue about dehydrators i decided I'd ask here not sure if this qualifies as cultivation, but i will be using it to dry my cultivated (and hunted) mushrooms. Please move this pst to the appropriate forum is this is wrong place.

My question is about ronco 5 tray electric food dehydrator is this appropiate for drying mushrooms, i will be drying all sorts of mushrooms actives, edibles and medicinals. I don't want one that will ruin psilocybian species.

If this isn't an appropriate one to use, what make/models do you suggest?

I use a cheap as dehydrator that gets pretty hot. So far there has been no sign of potency loss, if thats what your worried about.

sorry to steal your thread bro but i might have a similar question anyway. My dehidrator is also a poor ass dehydrator from goodwill for 8 bucks. The thing is it doesent have any kind of switch for temp change. only on/off. is this gonna be ight?

I bought a dehydrator Goodwill just to get the racks. Haven't used it yet, but I am planning on putting some desiccant in the bottom tray or two (probably with paper towel above and below to prevent dust from getting around, and then use the other trays for 'shrooms without even pluggung it in. Perhaps I will get one of those battery powered, hand held fans to put inside to circulate air a little (there is a fair amount of empty space at the bottom to prevent the heater from melting the bottom trays, but the heater will be off or removed). Mine has vents that can be fully closed or opened. One could use desiccant on every other tray or every third tray, in which cas there would probably be no real need for a fan.

I figure these will just be more space efficient than drying on boxes or drying racks. The thing cost me $5 and has like 6 or 8 racks. You could probably hit a few thrift stores and get a few of them and stack the trays as high as you want if you put desiccant trays at regular intervals.

Also, Alton Brown has a great method for drying herbs that I am going to try for shroms. Yes, shrooms will have a much higher moisture content then some leafy herb, but I still think it will work pretty good. You get at least two pleated furnace filters, put the stuff you want to dry into the pleats of one, put the other on top, and then strap them onto a box fan so that it forces air right through them. The air will not only be filtered as it travels past, but I think the fibers of the furnace filters probably wick moisture so that if one spot becomes slightly wet it will spread out and evaporate quickly. Also, multiple filters can be stacked.

Coctyle- leave the heater in the dehydrator, this way, between dryings you can just turn the dehydrator on to remove the moisture in the desiccant. Before you next batch, the desiccant will be bone dry... meaning your fruits will dry faster.
