syringe tek?
    #614019 - 04/20/02 07:02 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Could someone recomend a syringe tek for a first-timer... ive only dealt with
pre-maid syringes in the past, but now i only have prints, also i dont have a glovebox or a flowhood. I went through the Ultamate Mycology Dictionary but it didn't cover syringe tek.s at all. Links would be helpfull.
thanks.

Syringe Tek:
First off, take a shot glass and clean it up good with alcohol and let it dry in a clean enviornment. When it's dry, cover it with foil. I distill my own water but you don't have to. It's only a buck at almost any grocery store. I place it in the shotglass, cover it with foil, and let it cool. You can use the syringe to do this so that you have the perfect amount of water. When you're ready open the print(try not to breathe on it while it's open), and with a round tipped scaphel scrape some spores loose from the foil and let them pile in the fold of the foil. A quarter inch by quarter inch square is plenty to make a syringe but it doesn't hurt to use the whole print. Then remove the foil from the shotglass and dump your spores. Take your syringe and draw up the water. Then spray it back in there causing the floaters to sink and knocking any down that are sticking to the sides. Do this a couple of times and replace the foil over the glass. Take the glass and swirl it around just a little like people do with wine. You will notice spores starting to collect in the bottom. Suck these up first by guiding the needle tip back and forth across the pile as you pull the plunger out. By the time you get most of them your syringe will be about full. There will still be spores in the glass. You can never get them all. Store them in a clean dry place. If you use the frig, close them up in a ziplock first. There are all kinds of nasties that live in the frig. If you go to use them and they have clumped together, repeat the process of squirting them into a shotglass and sucking them back up. This should break them up sufficently. When innoculating always continue to shake the syringe to keep them from settling to the needle tip and all leaving on the first jars. A good flick of the wrist between each hole should be sufficent.
Just my 2 ccs on the issue,
Hope that helps.
:peace:

Go back to the Ultimate Mycodirectory and look under Syringe & Print Making. Every thing you need to know is in there, you must have just overlooked it.

There is also info on how to do this in the FAQ
