Daisuke Matsuzaka and his pitch - the "gyroball"

I was reading about this guy today, he's a star pitcher for the Seibu lions and will be posting this winter, allowing him to be bought by an MLB team - Mets, Yankees and Mariners all want him, so do the Rangers I believe. Apparently he has his own patented pitch that is catching on in Japan, a "gyroball." It's a variation of the split-fingered fastball.

You can search the web and find even more videos...I need to see a whole highlight reel of it to see exactly how it works, but it definitely has a dipping movement like the split finger....If anything it seems like a split-fingered sinkerball.

I read this a while ago. There were physicists trying to mathematically prove it possible to our laws of physics. They couldn't and said he just throws a good slider.

Yeah, the Mariners blog-o-sphere has been keen on this guy for the last 3 years. In the Japanese high school regionals (a VERY high intensity high school baseball tournament) he threw over 700 pitches in two games, the semi-final and the final, going the distance in each for both wins.

He is pretty much a legend in Japan. His first name is pronounced Dice-Kay.

The Seibu Lions actually hold his contract for one more year, (minor league contracts in Japan are for 8 years) and right now he's in his 7th.

However, Seibu's owner has been losing money for a while in his other business, and could get over 20 million in posting fees if he posts him at the end of this season, effectively terminating his contract. If he keep him for another season, he'll probably make the playoffs, but lose him for nothing to free agency.

To win posting, each team sends in a "sealed" bid, and then will win the rights to negotiate with him; in which the team will probably still have to sign him to a 50 million dollar deal over say 4 seasons. Lots of money here. Because of his legendary status in Japan, Yamamuchi (Mariners/Nintendo owner) will likely bid a ridiculous sum. With the Yankees hemorrhaging money, I doubt they would put so much into one player, and likely go after Zito. It will probably come down to the Angels and Mariners.

the grip looks like a halfass circle change .. the grip is not a splitter at all.. the action on the pitch almost looks like a fast screwball

more or less its just a change up that he holds funny.. shit, mark buehrle throws a 3 fingered change

im not a pitcher, but that pitch doesnt look that damn impressive and i dont see why anyone would even question whether it defies the laws of physics. MLB hitters will pick it up and itll get jacked several times over.

it doesnt defy the laws of physics.. its just like a screwball .. and any pitch no matter how good it may be will get hit hard if its not executed right

It's his location. When he locates it (which is damn near every time he throws it), there's not a lefty on this earth that can hit it. The only thing you can really do is take it for a ball, but the guy has such great command of his fastball, he can pick at the zone with ease.

His mechanics are flawless, and if the npb is AAAA, then his is the equivalent of a star young pitcher who's been stuck in the minors for way to long.

If he comes over and doesn't have an ERA under 3.50, I will be amazed.

i wont. he better have more than one great pitch. its a pitchers ability to change things up that keeps hitters on their toes. his fastball better be good too or his "gyroball" will get rocked, if not right away, eventually.

Really, he doesn't even throw his "gyroball" that much.

He has three devastating offspeed pitches, all of which can be thrown for strikes. The splitter, the forkball, and a tight-spin slider. Along with a lively 93-95 mph fastball he has a hell of an arsenal.

He dominated in the WBC mind you.

Mushnoon, I feel your being a little ignorant. There is a lot about Diasuke that you don't know, and I'm not saying you have to believe he'll be good, you just have to wait and see, or go download some of his playoff games on audio. Only I think I'm the only person dorky enough to do something like that.

im not being ignorant. no one really mentioned that he had other great pitches until after my post. I still truly believe that he wont be a dominant force in the MLB. he may have a 3.00 ERA and he may win 16-17 games but he wont dominate like everyone here suggests. I wont download the audio, I really dont care that much. I dont follow baseball really closely, mostly just the Cardinals who have been on a hell of a slide lately. Oh well, the Dominican Jesus will bring us back.
