Yeah, a reasonable contract in comparison to the $100 million dollar one that Boras was trying to negotiate.  Have to hand it to Theo Epstein for not caving in to Boras' ridiculous demands and saying yes this is a $100 million dollar pitcher - but we already paid 50 million for him.

Anywho, I can't wait to see Hideki Matsui launch one of them gyroballs over the right field wall at Yankee Stadium.

They really HAD to sign him.

Especially after the Yanks got Pettite/Clemens.

what a joke (AL central fan here)

matsuzaka line for 2007: 6-12 season, 4.01 era, 160 Ks... at best, if he can pitch a whole season and get run support

totally unproven pitcher getting all sorts of money thrown around, he's never faced a lineup comparable to the average MLB lineup

I thought they should have settled that deal early and traded him away for a group of players to fit all their needs.

It's just if you are going to spend that much money, you'd better be damn sure it's going to take your team to at least the playoffs otherwise I don't think it's worth it. Of course, with as much as tickets cost in Boston...

I'd heard about this "gyroball" but had never seen it.

Youtube'd it, it's a pretty galldern nice-lookin' pitch.

Was that uh, Ichiro that he struck out at one point? If so, I will say, I'm impressed. Ichiro is damn hard to strike out. He covers the plate well, and he's pesky as fuck.

WEll, if you face someone enough times you are going to strike them out eventually. Hell, even Mark Buehrle has struck out Ichiro twice and Ichiro hits .400 lifetime against Buehrle. 14 for 35 lifetime.

Granted, you're absolutely right. But, it does make me feel better to see him strike someone out of MLB caliber.

Anybody know why Matsuzaka didn't play in the WBC last year?

Yeah - he went 3-0 and was NASTY in it.  I'm anxious to see how he does against a stacked MLB lineup though, especially after they see him once or twice.  Time will tell I guess.  I'm glad the Sox didn't let Boras fuck them as badly as he tried to.

Wow.

Thats an insane view. Its a good thing you arent the GM of anyone. Gil Meche is probably the guy who got the most money for the least talent this offeseason...
