NEW STYLE GLOVE BOX...check it out! * 2
    #6079366 -

Since this post thread I have redone this G-box.Here is the new version. Oh...all the jars done in the original were good /no comtam jars. Yeah for glove boxes! Here is the redone version as i said I would likely soon make.

I admit, my first round of innoculating jars(WBS) was a bit clumsy. Even though I had a good/sterile glove box it was not quite tall enough and I had to lean each jar and then get the needle right(I did not account for the length of a full out syringe!). It worked..it was just not so smooth. Four days and I have little white Myc spots all over in them. We'll see. I was very careful about sterilization, and hopefully that made up for my lack of efficiency inoc. wise!
Anyway, it got me thinking. Seemed like it would be nice to have the WHOLE jar out of my way completely (and held in perfect position at the same time). This would free up one hand for the most part and allow me to concentrate on the so important inoculation hand. I work in a glove box so the alcohol pad for the needle is not 'so' necessary, but it would be easier with 'such a system'. Following photos are what I made.
I started with this config. rubbermaid bin only because it brought my already built(too shallow)glove box up to the correct working height. I use pint jars currently so if the table was higher I could have used a WAY shallower box. And wider too, to better suit the width of the actual glove box. Oh well...idea still sound. Note the white piece of pvc tube running across the middle. That is to support the corex surface(next picture)that the holes for the jars are cut into. Corex is corrugated plastic...such as political signs are made of. You can get it at any screen print or sign supply shop.

This next picture shows (see it through the open hole)this support strut. Once the jars are loaded in the corex bottom of the glove box they are heavy enough to need this support.

This next pic is how the whole thing looks overall. The blue bin below has just a little bleach solution poured in(about 1/3 cup)and is sterilised like the glove box itself. The glass part of the jars extend through the holes cut in the corex. Only thing showing is the lid, the part you need. Holes positioned all alike.

I have a stainless steel cup in the center with sterile/alcohol soaked foam. This is the stage for the syringe and is easy to reach whichever hand needs it. I don't use gloves. I sterilise my hands and the inside/outside of the bags that cover my arms. There is a fat rubber band makeing an airtight seal at the wrists. The rest of the inside has been pre-sterilised. I place the jars in the holes so the four on the right(holds eight)are held so they can be easily and quickly(!)inoculated with my right hand. Then I transfer the syr to the left hand and do the same for the left four jars.

Each jar has two holes(at 12 and 6 o:clock) Since it is less awkward to inoculate the hole at 6 o;clock(the way your hand wants to bend), I innoc all those first and then spin all the jars 180 and innoc those other holes. I then re-cover with foil.
These pics are a representation. One shows the glass off and the jars are not prepared. Just wanted to show ya'; test the 'feel' of this process and it feels very comfortable to do this way!
If you don't mind somehow creating a two stage/compartment glovebox...you might try this. Nice to have the jars out of the way and 'held' stable also.
I think this is my idea. I have never seen anybody else doing it. Not that it is a big deal...but it does lend some control to the jars that does not depend on ones' hands and having them lined up so well/close together adds to the ease and speed. Which is what felt weird before. Even the online videos of some people innoculating look kinda awkward. Not awkward at all with this. I did some mock inoculation runs and it was way smooth.

Thanks. It's odd in configuration I realise. You could do this with a two bin(one shallow and one deep)system much lighter and cleaner. but since I built the glove box already I decided to modify it rather than toss it. If I was starting over, I could do it much simpler. and I probably will before long. Althought the corex bottom of this one is way easier to cut than plastic would be. If anybody does this with plastic bins I would suggest inverting the top one and still using a piece of corex to seperate the compartments...since it is so easy to cut the holes in. You would have to cut a large square in the top(was the bins bottom)and attach a piece of glass or plex for clearest view.
Just think the idea is cool, For the added jar stability and layout, so, speed to inoculate. Now..if I coul just build an innoculating robot arm from old motors and bike parts!!!!  :smirk:

Its nice to see you put some effort into this. I would attempt to upgrade my glovebox but my schedule lately has been busy, and will be for the next while

Good job

I like it. The only downside I see is you can't see the sides of the jars. I guess it isn't too important, but I'd like to see where my solution is going and making sure it's dripping down the sides. But.. it doesn't really matter. And.. I've yet to grow shrooms.. SO.. I like it  :mushroom2:

....Maybe I'm missing something but why would it matter if it drips down the sides when you are going to shake it right afterwards anyway ??

doesnt matter too much unless you are using the PFtek which involved little shaking due to how full the jars are.

I too thought at first about that, but it really does not matter as you can feel the needle touch the glass and you quickly learn the angle to use during inoculation WHEN the jars are all at the same angle(as they are with this method). Not everybody injects via edge holes, some use a single central hole and angle the needle for 'sorta' toward the glass. The spores do not care where they go...the edge style of inoculation is generally to give the spores the widest dispersal as possible. BUT doing a perfect visual side of jar glass inoc is not mandatory. You will be shaking them up as well. Again, it is still easy to do side inocs with this method. This method makes you concentrate more on the actual syringe/needle angle and yet frees you up so that is easier as well. You can monitor your inocs by watching the gauge on the syringe. I would suggest doing some mock inoculations. It can really help you get the feel of using the syringe which is guaranteed to feel awkward if you have not dones so. I did four mock (water needle/empty jars)inocs on an 8 jar set and I was WAY better on number three and four attempts, which felt real natural. Since these little syrs are not cheap(!)and you waited a good bit to get it...advance familiarity with how to 'move with it' is sensible to practice. Awkward inocs when and if you have taken time and work to get everything else right is a feeling I do not wish to repeat. You don't want to wonder for WEEKS if you will get contams BECAUSE you don't inoc well enough. Bleh feeling!
I was more concerned about setting up for and gaining REAL mastery and speed with the needle, in modifying this. If the jars are prepped right and the glove box is sterile...then a good injection technique is certainly important to KNOW you have. However one does it. This feels real good to me. Now my inoc style is as confident as my system is sterile. Worth the time converting my Gbox for.

Yeah...go to grains. Then put a hole big enough for a half galon Master, and g2g would be awesomely easy without fear of contam. Jus use a steril tablespoon, and scoop one in to every jar.

I am doing wbs right now(have 24 inc-ing)and then I will do rye. I have already thought about having an interchangeable bottom piece cut with quart sized holes or perhaps even one half and half. I will do some g2g but I may keep it to pints for now as I can still spawn those to usable tray sizes(keepin' it small). I even got an email from RONCO today...expressing interest in this!!!Seems they want to add a home shroom kit to their 'as seen on T.V.' line-up! (If only!!!!)It will be called the 'shrooma-matic'. Ozzy will be on the box.

I did not like the small shrooms I was seeing with others using the brf method so I skipped that and started with grain(allbeit wbs). I wanted SOMETHING spawnable....even to begin. and bigger shrooms. I had the room and the stuff to make that doable...so why not. I'm debating quarts though? I don't need that much! Think I will just circulate my current size jars/trays till I really get it down.

Ah haaaa! Yeah...that sounds way cool...better than the needle. I had only thought of how great it would be for agar as well as inocs. But G2G would be stupidly easy and safe in this box! I will at least have a pint or two from my inc-ing batch I can use to spawn to more pint jars and not change(yet)anything. Looks like I will be cutting up more corex(for quarts)if/when I go that way. I like this thing even more now. I might even build one that is...oh...say...8 feet long and three jar rows deep??! but then I would need a big step van with expensive decals on the side; employees, and it just gets to be too much at that point!
THANKS!

Cool! Maybe somebody will give me some props/ a rating sometime? I thought it was a cool idea. Let me know how you like it, when you make one.
I'm always thinking up weirdly; logical and helpful/practical stuff. I don't know if I get it from out of body experiences...genes...or the chemicals that are in Beef-a-roni? I made a lot of money off of one(though the 'combination 'lawn mower-baby stroller' and 'payphone/urinal' went nowhere!)of my ideas. I just hope this one is helpful to others. Glad to have a new idea for my shroom-family. Makes me feel pretty freakin' good!   :mushroom2:
