Glove Box.....

I was reading a tek and ran accross this:
GLOVE BOX If you?re concerned about sterility, a good way to accomplish this is to make a "glove box," an enclosed, semi-sealed box with holes for gloves to go through and a see-through top. A cheap, halfway decent one can be built for only a couple bucks worth of stuff. All you need is a large cardboard box, some tape and saran wrap to go over the top of the box, and a pair of new, unused dishwashing gloves. Tape saran wrap over the top and cut two holes big enough for your arms in the sides. Disinfect the gloves and the inside of the box with Lysol spray disinfectant. A small gate can be cut into the side of the box for getting the syringe and jars into the box, or they can be put through one of the arm holes (if you choose not to attach the gloves to the holes)
Is this a good idea? Or is this a bit of an over kill? Just wondering if one should make a glove box or if it is safe enough to Inoculate in open air in a bed room

It can only help. I think it's a good idea.

It is a great idea. I listed in a thread on how I made my glove box and am sure that there are many more threads besides mine. It costs about 5-6 dollars to make and all of the materials are at wal-mart

Definitely worth the effort. Cheap, easy to construct, and very practicle.

Here is a glove box I used back when i grew that was free and gave me 99% sterile conditions.. I would Just rub alcohol on my hands before putting them in. Also kept a can of lysol around to spray in there everytime I removed the quality hi-tech see-threw top.
Also take note to the f'ing massive 80cc syringe

Here is the glovebox that a friend is constructing for me. I like overkill!
What do you guys think? It's not finished yet. Just a few things to tinker with. I had to argue with him to not install an air lock. Too much trouble.

He is actually thinking of taking orders if other amateur mycologists are interested in having one constructed for them. I showed him pix of "ghetto" rigged rubbermaid boxes but he's somewhat of the aesthetics snob. He likes nice, clean lines. I must admit. I do too!
Cheers

Nice glove box. Try building a flow hood too, I'm sure those would sell.

Thought would share with all of you my box I created for a sterile flow hood. It still is in beta stage and is constantly changing when better ideas come to mind. These gloves are used for artificial insemination on dairy cattle. They are plenty long for me to attach to the box as you can see on the following pics.
Pic of the temporary glove box.
So far the gloves and the Gateway box work great. Oh p.s. Lysol is my friend

You dont need a glove box to innoculate with a syringe, but syringes are not always used. When you have a new strain maybe, but when you are trying to keep your shit alive, most people do grain to grain transferes wich require you to open your jars and put some grain from another in... This method speeds up colonization, and makes it alot easier than making a syringe. If you do this, a glove box will save your ass, many times.

************** there glove box is 45 dollars which is a cheap price ive purchased 2 have 4 they work remarkable and i made two of these one day that are exactly the same for 32 dollars cost per or like 29 going to walmart, home depot,Menard's etc think of it as paying some one 13 dollars to save you 2-3 days of your time to enjoy your self and not be frustrated and its free shipping so. you want a still air chamber and a 1/10 bleach mix is all thats needed to kill bacteria its better then Lysol at 2.89 a can its about 15 fold on price u can do a 1/5 ratio as well to be more secure but 1/10 wont stain cloths smell etc and kill all bacteria in air and etc. with a 8 min dry time put whatever your working on inside the box and your fine and you don't need a air tight seal as long as you are in a room thats air has settled your fine. also you can mist the air with your spray bottle to kill most bacteria in the air as well as help dust settle thanks i geuss u can say i got ripped whatever but i like to work on my environment or my cases over building stuff plus with work comes pleasure
