I inoculated 24 quart jars several weeks ago and all but one have contamed. The contam made the wbs look old and grey and when I shook the jars, plumes of smoke would form. There was one jar however that seems to have not been affected by the contam and looks as though it's healthy myc. It's fully colonized now and I'd like to do a G2G transfer to several other quart jars if possible.

I also inoculated a couple half pint jars before the quart jars and they seem to have a healthy myc too. So is it possible that the one quart jar is really contam free and I wont have any problems doing a G2G transfer (assuming I'm sterile in that procedure)?

Should be fine.
23 out of 24 jars being contamed is very very high though as IMO anything more than 15-20% would be considered higher than norm. I think next time before you start again think about sterility and read up on a few faqs because even though jars of WBS are dirt cheap the main factor would be time, I certainly wouldn't want to waste hours sterilizing, inoculating etc only to have them all contaminate.

My guess is that the one that is good was the first jar you inoculated. You will know if things are cool when you birth it (wont smell like old socks)

Why did you use such large jars? Ever try 4oz jars? They rock and roll in about 2 weeks. Just need a bunch of them, but they colonize so fast that contam is a worry of the past.

when u case it or do w/e smell it, if it smells like mushroom tissue and nothing else, ur good to go

*Update*

Ok, so looks like everyone was right and the one jar was fine. I did a G2G transfer to 10 differnt quart jars from the one that didn't contaminate and they're all taking off just fine with no contaminates.

I'm starting to wonder though. I got three syringes PESA, Texas, and Lipa Yai, in March and finally got to use the Pesa in august (contaminated 23/24 jars) and the texas I just used to innoc 8 pint jars. 6 of the pint jars look good but two of them have contamned with the same thing that was in the quart jars.

I'm very sterile with all of this. I do everything in a 10x8x10 room. I spray the room liberally with oust before hand and use hand sanitizer a couple times during the process. I never touch the needle, and flame sterilize then wipe with an alcohol soaked paper towel. I keep the needle in the paper towel all the way until innoc and immediately afterward. I then repeat procedure for every other jar.
The contamn doesn't look like anything I've seen outside of the one person's post I saw that I mentioned before. It's the weirdest thing. I know people say syringes last a while even though the sponsers give them about 45 days. Could it have something to do with the fact that the syringes are old? I didn't think so at first, but now I'm wondering. Oh and I made another LC with the texas syringe. Do you think I should use it to innoc my next batch or just toss it and wait for my other PESA syringe I have coming in the mail to make a PESA LC. Thanks!
