a concern with Pinning
    #6030706 -

My one casing has a substrate depth of about 1-1 1/2". My Other has about 3". I've built two separate FC for them. Now the one with less substrate is beginning to pin like crazy. The other one however has maybe about 3 pins total that I've seen. Is it because it has a deeper substrate? I fan both casings with a fan for 30 seconds and a lightly mist my casings about 4-5 times a day. They get 12 hours from a cool white fluorescent lamp. Also the one FC with the 3" substrate (the one that's taking it's sweet old time), the perlite is pretty damp in that FC. It's been about 8 days. Should I wait a little longer? I'm thinking of going out and buying more perlite for that FC. I think it's because of maybe the lack of humidity in the FC. Well Suggestions and helpful guidance would be greatly appreciated!

there's lots of variables that would create a disparity in the number of pins.

how you laid the casing, how thick, how colonized you let it get before fruiting, how much FAE you're giving it, light, humidity, and so on. there's not an easy answer why one has more pins than the other, you have to consider all those things. if i were you i'd step back and ask yourself what did you do different (or what looks different) on the one that's pinning like crazy versus the one that isn't. there's probably more differences (and certainly more important ones you need to consider) than the substrate thickness. a thicker more massive substrate is also going to have higher FAE requirements, because it will produce more CO2. so take that into account for sure... if you're fanning them equally... well you might want to step it up a little on the larger tray.

and yes it only stands to reason that a thicker substrate casing is going to take a little longer to get going. pins don't come until colonization is complete, and it may have simply taken a little longer to reach complete colonization with more substrate mass!

Ok, thanx for the advice. I'm going out to buy more perlite because the one in the FC has gotten rather damp and just in case in may be the humidity....also I took out the polyfil in one of the holes hopefully giving it more FAE for the CO2. I know the casing mix is the same level, and they both get the properate amount of light. Or maybe I'm just over reacting and in know time it will pin just as good. Thanx for the advice again!
