Help: WBS + Coir -> Casing
    #6024289 -

OK.  After dutifully searching for the past week, no definitive answers have been found as to WTF is supposed to happen when spawning WBS to Coir.  If there is a TEK that answers all of this, feel free to chide and point me to that.  Else, help please!

There exists a quart of happily colonized WBS.  Also a brick of Coir.  Have a PC and the other supplies needed like Tyvek, containers, jars, etc.  The intention is to spawn WBS to CC and then case when the mix is colonized.

Here is the confusion:
1)Planning a 1:1 ratio of WBS to CC thinking that will help to get more than 1 good flush from wbs/coir.  Does that seem reasonable?

2)Other than hydrating the CC, what other prep needs to be done?  Can it be PC'd for like an hour prior to mixing it w/ the WBS (after cooling of course)?

3)Also not sure exactly how to "mix" the WBS and coir.  I have read RR say to layer it.  So does  one layer it?  Mix it w/ a spoon??

4)Imagining the mixing process needs to be done in a clean room, but not sure.  Need help understanding here.

5)Not sure 'where' to mix -- mix the CC and WBS in a jar and later move it to a tray when ready to case, or allow the CC/WB to colonize in the tray that is intended for eventual casing?

Thanks for your help!

Thanks, Cubenisseur. Def helps some.

"each coir brick makes about 2 trays. I spawned 1 qt. per tray, and placed 1/2 qt on top to colonize the top layer first. (to aid as a contam barrier)"

Looks like this is open air. Looks like there is no PCing done to the Coir. Still confused at the above statement. Sounds like layers of pure Coir and pure WBS. Almost like lasagnae...right?

Thanks

Yes, its done in open air.  There's so much spawn being introduced that your mycelium already has an advantage over contaminates and should colonize the substrate well before any contams get a shot at it.  You still want to be clean of course but sterility here isn't as vital as when you inoculate jars and such.

It is true you do not even need to PC the coir.  In fact, that would be counter productive - you should pasteurize bulk substrates not sterilize them.  But, because coir is already pretty "clean" out of the package (and because it was dehydrated meaning there's nothing living in it when you start), you don't even need to pasteurize it.  If you mix it with any sorts of additives you'll want to pasteurize properly but if you're using straight coir you can just go as is.  Again its for the same reasons as above, your spawn will simply chow it down before anything else can.

And yeah you can layer it like lasagna.  What I do is mix it around with a spoon like you first mentioned so its evenly distribtued, then sprinkle a little bit of extra spawn on the top so the top colonizes first forming a bit of a conaminate barrier protecting the substrate underneath.  So for all that its more a matter of preference and personal technique... I've certainly had no trouble mixing it around with a spoon.

Whuddup, creamcorn

That is very clear.  When this was written earlier, only coir was in hand.  Now there is gypsum and coffee grounds that could be added if desired...  No lime for this project (I can't seem to locate anything but a granular type of lime - espomo organic traditions brand.)

Would a beginner be advised to do a straight-up coir spawn, or is it even in a beginner's intrest to use coir+gypsum+coffee grounds to spawn WBS to?

EDIT: If the top is colonized WBS, how can you tell if when it is done?

TYA,

I'd say add the additives. I think that RR or Creamcorn just posted a recipie with those additives the other day, but I don't remember where. Hopefully someone else will chime in that has experience. I have only used poo.

GL! I look forward to seeing the results!

use the coffee grounds and the gypsum both.

you can tell when it's done colonizing when the substrate
starts shooting up rizomorphic mycelium looking for more food.

Sweet.  My pants feel kinda funny after seeing mm's colonized substrate   Something about the myc wanting more lol

I'll go look for that info, MM.  Specifically I'll hope it says how to pasteurize the mix...  Feel free to tell me here, of course, if y'unt too.

You guys rule. :scrambled:

Layering your grain spawn in between a bottom layer and a top layer of coir will give the grains protection throughout the flushes. Spent or saturated grain exposed to air can lead to contamination.

Just put down an even layer of coir in the tray, the grain spawn and then a top layer of coir. You should pasteurize the coir as well prior to using it.

Cool, Hotnuts. Thinking about another grain / coir layer in there though.

Just got done mic pasteurizing coir+ It seems too hot so I imagine it will sit for the next 4 hours or so... Plus that will give everyone time to tell me a better way to do it since I haven't spawned yet. I did what some member ?? mentioned: (3m on/15 off)*3
