i started off with no experience either. do u have a good ear? can u keep rythm? these and other factors might have something to do with how quick/well u learn. i immediately began progressing playing by ear. now its to the point where if u let me hear it once, no matter what it is, i can play it. its like letting the guitar become another voice.... u learn to speak on the spot just saying what is on ur mind and putting into the form of sound with ur voice. guitar is like this. being able to have a sound in ur head and putting it out into energy in the form of sound. ok maybe im gettin a little carried away but all i can say for now is ur fingers are capable of playing the guitar. nothing physically is preventing u from advancing so just let ur mind flow with it and let the tunes come. u know what they say. practice makes perfect.

My advice would be to pick up a chord book and go from there. Once you learn a few chords you can throw together some good sounding melodys.

count the beat with songs. if theres 4 measures ( u probably dont know what that means) then count to 4 over and over with the beat. sometimes the beat is a 1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3 so just count to 3 in that case. let it flow bro

I started playing the guitar 5 years ago playing the deftones - my own summer. It was simple enough I could pick it up. I would suggest learning open chords to make your fingers stronger and get used to moving them around. Once you learn chords you can pick up a lot of easy songs, because most can be played using 4 or less. The tricky part is getting past the hurdles of just getting off the ground. Just pratice and it will come.

Playing guitar means using your hands and fingers in ways that you never did before; thus, you have to strengthen your hands to be able to make chords and play licks and runs. You can use a mentronome to aid in your rhythm playing. The best thing, though, is to play along with CDs. Start with basic chords, work on them until you can comfortably hold and play the basic shapes--E, A, D, C, G, F. Then learn some scales--Pentatonic, Mixolydian, Dorian, etc. At that point, you should be able to play along with your favorite band's CD. It takes a lot of work and dedication to play the guitar well. Unless you are one of those folks from "the land of no rhythm," you can do it. Good luck.

Pick to either learn notes or chords first. Get a learners guitar book or something along those lines. Yeah, yeah you don't wanna be a 'newb' with a book like that, but it seriously helps so much. It's more important to work on your finger posture and note and chord pronounciation at first rather than jamming.

Have fun!

Learn power chords. Learn open chords. Learn Beatles and Nirvana. Then you'll be in a place to decide where you want to focus your efforts.

You know what? I'd be as bold to state that you should dismiss all recommendations to "learn chords, man". :smirk:

This is what you need to do:

First, you need to get your guitar tuned. Until you've played guitar enough to really be familiar with the notes and how it should all sound, I'd suggest getting a little electronic tuner, Korg is a good brand. Find out what each string is suspossed to be tuned to, plenty of information on the net for that, or simply just ask someone here.

Once you've tuned your guitar, you need to sit down with it, put a pick in your right hand (assuming you are playing a right-handed guitar, of course), and you need to work on fretting a single note.

Hold down a string behind any given fret (the little metal nails running acrossed your guitar's fretboard). Make sure you are positioning your finger directly behind it. Work on holding your finger down on the string, right at that fret, and then picking the string in order to produce a clear note.

You don't want a lot of buzzing, but you don't want to strike the string too hard either, to the point where it is all choppy. It shouldn't take too much pressure to fret the string, but make sure it is pressed down enough to get that note sounding great.

Work on that for awhile. Try different frets, and different strings.

From there, I would work on transitioning from one fret to another one, say on that same string, or on a different string. Hit open strings as well when you feel like it, which means you pick the string without actually fretting it. Work on being able to go from one fret to the next without interuption.

Hey, you might not be playing any parts from songs that you know yet, or pulling off any solos, or even some thick, melodic chords, but you have to realize that Rome wasn't built in a day.

As you become more comfortable with fretting and picking different notes, going from different strings and doing it without a lot of buzzing and excessive noise, then why not try fretting two different frets, on two different strings, at once?

Take your time with it, and have fun with it. Don't discourage yourself by expecting too much or becoming disappointed and then bored with it. If you are really interested in playing, you'll definitely want to work with it and develop yourself. Its great stuff, and the more time and energy you put into it, the more you will be able to express yourself.

All I suggest to start out with is to really work with becoming familar with the strings and the fretboard. Spend some time getting used to the guitar and the simple basics of how to play. If you really get into just doing that, then it will all lead from there.

And if you ever have any questions, or simply someone to say to you "Hey, fuck head, pick up that damned guitar!" than pm me.

I've been playing guitar for almost 4 years I think the most important thing is just not giving up on playing it. Especially at first it can get frustrating, people feel like they arent improving, though they are. Just stick to it and when you think in hindsight you will notice how much you're progressing. So, number 1 thing...

DONT GIVE UP!

i highly recommend an instructional book. i didnt use one at first and i found myself just playing chords the whole time, and not really knowing that much about what i was doing. i was kicking myself for only being able to read tab too.

Because a beginner can understand it and an expert can still learn from it.
