if you are having trouble keeping your guitar strings from sticking in the nut (making it impossible to keep in tune or use the whammy bar a la hendrix), take a pencil and collect a lot of graphite dust (color a spot on a piece of paper for a long time.) then put the graphite dust into the slots on the nut and restring with good strings like elixirs. the graphite acts like a lubricant keeping the strings from slipping.

i can do 3rd stone style dives and my guitar returns back to tune, though... i bet my guitar is set up a tad better than most peoples.

you know what I think I want on my next electric guitar? those nuts at the top of the neck that screw up and down, and you tune it and screw them down to lock the strings, I don't know what they're called. but they're handy I think

good tip automan , I always just ran a pencil through the grooves in the nut a few times... but I guess it would make more sense to actually collect the powder and make sure theres a good coating in there.
I have a floyd rose and locking nut on one of my guitars. if you're not abusing the whammy all the time, it's probably unnecessary, along with being a bother to set up correctly compared to my other guitars.

the nut is the thinger that the strings run over at the top of the neck/base of the headstock.

i do the same thing.. except i use a bottle of graphite that i have. Its not a very expensive item, 2$ for a bottle that will last you quite a while. most hardware stores carry it. also.. parker makes some of their guitars with graphite nuts if i do recall correctly.

Zekebomb is talking about a locking nut, those are usually only found on guitars that have trem bridges on them

I have an old acoustic nut , and the 6th string has rreally made a nasty dip in the nut over the years, and while I use paper etc, I am going to try your tip as well.
(the nut on my electric cant even hold a 6th string and the nut on mu acoustic needs to be replaced, but it still sounds awsome)
