Psychotria Viridis Growers, HELP ME!
    #5997099 -

I've searched the net, and shroomery, and have come up with little information regarding the care of psychotria viridis. I was wondering a few things. What kind of soil do they like? How much water do they like? Lighting? Any advice you can think of would be great.

ive got mine in a 1gallon pot of BLACK GOLD (peat moss, compost, perlite, pumice, forest hummus), and under a 32W CFL and 80W shoplight, i make sure the soils stays moist, and i mist it all day long, though im sure i could do it less i just like to pamper it. i think they need a little more lighting than im giving it, but not by much.

My viridis seems to do well infront of my house, getting direct light half the day, and shade the other half. They aren't that bad at reacting to direct light as people say. I've heard they have similar conditions to salvia.

The ones you guys have I had outside (its fairly humid but not exactly Bangladesh) They were on a porch under some shade. They got approx 5 hours of late afternoon sun. I noticed stimulus from the wind caused the stems to beef up alot so a fan on a very low setting might be in order. They like fairly neutral soil. Those have been grown organic all the way. I would load down the soil with bone and blood meal as well as watering with a liberal amount of fish emulsion. Yours should take off at some point if they are being treated right. I don't mean to say that they'll grow like weeds but fast for them. Another thing is that they like their root space. Its not quite as bad as Salvia where she needs more space than she's really using. I mean the roots fill in and the plant doesn't suffer but growth does slow down a good bit. Remember that the rain forest's soil is more or less sand. So just make a really light rich soil and you'll be fine.

i grew soem under a single 6500k 18" flouro and they grew fine. their requirements are little, but so is their growth. with the mentioned conditions above it should grow rather fast. at best (under better lighting) i got about 1" a month. on 12" plants.

Mine is growing 'under' a 600w HPS (P. V is off to the edge of the grow area so doesn't get the full force of the light) for 12 hours of light, in moist soil - no special mix. The humidity isn't too great so I mist the P. V whenever I can, if you don't leaves will become more crinkly & have trouble opening properly.
It is growing well, though I think it needs to be repotted into a larger pot (pot currently around 6" deep & 6" diameter), and is putting out lots of branches/stems though I think that is because it isn't really climbing up anything & is trying to make more branches to 'grab hold'.

P.viridis is a shrub not a vine. I am going to be moving to Utah soon and am going to be having to do the indoor thing. I am glad to see some one else has been there before(glad to know I'll be less likely to fuck it up) Anyways I was thinking maybe a wick hydro system might be in order. Since they are more of a long term sort of plant I thought wick would be the appropriate hydro set-up. Any thoughts?

You run a bit of string down from the stem through the growing medium into a bucket of water & water is drawn up the string into the grow medium. Don't know how well it'd work for P. V as I've never tried it.

Recently I was given a broken complete, self contained hydro system (some of the stuff still worked) So I set out reading as many books on growing herb as possible. Anyways, a couple of the guys said that it worked great. It is low tek (nothing to break per say) and effective. By the way, nylon rope rather than string is what they advised. Also for larger pots, two bits of rope would be in order. It works by capillary action. The other plus is that, if you want, you can mix a little compost in with the perlite and what have you for some added goodness. The reason why I thought that this would be a well suited method for viridis is because there is no tubing or anything like that for the roots to clog up. (see the salvia hydro tek that was posted recently.)
