Psychotria viridis pest problem.
    #4066136 - 04/17/05 07:46 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

my 2 Psychotria viridis plants got aphids on them from begin indoors all winter. i finally decided to move them out to my greenhouse and use pyrethrum and water mixture to kill off the aphids and after being applied for 5 minutes i washed the pyrethrum off. the next day all the new growth died on my plants and some of the leaves are starting to look unhealthy. im guessing that it will regrow but im wondering if anyone has had this happen to their Psychotria viridis before, and im wondering if they are sensitive to chemicals even if they are all natural? I should have just let the natural predators kill the aphids instead of killing them myself.  :frown:

Introduce Ladybugs...I hear they kill aphids.

Thats a much more safer option if available

yeah, they do (i live on an organic farm) but im still wondering if PV is real weak in terms of being senstive to organic chemicals. AND i am hoping that my plants regenerate after time, it killed off 10 new leaves between 2 plants. and some mature leaves are starting to get a bit brown and yellow. but one of the shoots is already regrowing which is good.

Aphids suck ass, I bought lady bugs and still have aphids. I also use sticky yellow traps and neem oil, still have aphids. Seriously the aphids will not die, I need some ddt, lol.

I have a psychotria virdis plant and she seems fine to neem oil, yet this is a fairly established plant with a huge root system.
To combat aphids those sticky traps work well because any chance those fuckers get they will lay eggs. They hate neem oil, but you would constantly have to spray the substance into the air to irritate the pest from staying out of the area. So neem oil is not really effective for aphids, neither are lady bugs. Lady bugs will eat some of the eggs, but not all and you will have ahpids forever.

I noticed aphids love goddamn salvia plants. They don't care about virdis when you have salvia god. Honestly aphids love salvia or something.

I've used concentrated garlic soaked water mixed with occasionally a little soap when they get out of hand if I'm not planning on harvesting the plant soon. my plants mostly get hit with catapillers and larvae of that type and beatles and a good spray at night keeps them away its just something i try not to do often.

I use safer's soap and it works fine on aphids. I had a bad infestation on my kratom and got rid of it. I had to spray every day for a week and then every couple days for a while but now they are all gone. You have to go over the plant thoroughly paying attention to the undersides of the leaves.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)
